First things first, let's get a little technical here: acne cosmetica is caused by "cosmetic and skincare products that can also worsen the usual hormonal-type acne," explains Dr. Vermén Verallo-Rowell of VMV Hypoallergenics. There's also two types: folliculitis, which is chemical irritation of the hair follicle, and comedogenesis, true acne aggravation. The latter is a very sneaky kind of acne, however, since it appears long after starting the use of the product causing the breakouts. This can make it difficult to narrow down what's causing those new visitors on your face. Is it my period? Was it that greasy dinner I had? Did I not wash my face well enough last night? It could be none of those things if you switched to a new moisturizer or shampoo that's inflaming your skin.
Verallo-Rowell also explains that with prolonged use of pore-clogging ingredients, bigger cysts may appear. Terrifying, right? Don't be alarmed, though—acne cosmetica can be ameliorated. She suggests being strict about using only noncomedogenic products for everything from hair, body, and bath products to skincare and makeup—even laundry soap. It's important to replace all products with non-pore-clogging ingredients, even if you think the cause of your body acne is your bodywash, because the culprit could actually be the shampoo trickling down your back while you shower.
