Under most circumstances, we'd tell you that consolidation is not the best beauty strategy—taking the time to approach your routine on a step-by-step basis insures that you're treating your face and hair with care, not to mention that the chemicals in some products can be rendered less effective when mixed with others.
But during a recent, positively blissful facial at natural beauty destination CAP Beauty in NYC, our lovely and talented esthetician, Stephanie Lauren Brown, gave us a tip in passing that stuck, because it happens to be both brilliant and highly convenient. "Try mixing your serum or moisturizer with a bit of water or water-based toner," she advised. The reasoning? Because your skin absorbs water easily, using H2O as a carrier of other products all but guarantees deeper absorption. (Plus, you get to combine your toning and moisturizing steps—something we certainly won't mind on busy mornings.)
Of course, being the self-dubbed beauty guinea pigs that we are, we had to put Brown's advice to the test. But after two weeks, the bulk of which involved a ski trip in super-dry, wintry conditions, we can confirm that her tip kept our complexion looking plump, hydrated, and none the worse for wear. And a bonus tip straight from us: Finish off every skin-pampering sesh with a few spritzes of face mist or hydrosol to enhance the effect.
