Matching your makeup to your outfit might sound kind of retro, but sometimes the ladylike notion packs a necessary punch, as demonstrated by the slew of celebrities above. Makeup artist Kate Lee—who works with actresses like Rooney Mara, Anne Hathaway, and Kate Bosworth—attributes the rising trend to the rise of color cosmetics. “Using bright colors has not been super fashionable since the ‘80s,” she says. “But I think we are moving into a new era that will change the way we use makeup.” Sure enough, makeup artist Charlotte Tillbury matched the models’ lips to their dresses at Prabal Gurung’s spring show in New York earlier this month, Peter Philips did the same at Fendi, and a gaggle of street style stars are matching their nail polish to their frocks.
