When Good Old-Fashioned Matching Works
Matching your makeup to your outfit might sound kind of retro, but sometimes the ladylike notion packs a necessary punch, as demonstrated by the slew of celebrities above. Makeup artist Kate Lee—who works with actresses like Rooney Mara, Anne Hathaway, and Kate Bosworth—attributes the rising trend to the rise of color cosmetics. “Using bright colors has not been super fashionable since the ‘80s,” she says. “But I think we are moving into a new era that will change the way we use makeup.” Sure enough, makeup artist Charlotte Tillbury matched the models’ lips to their dresses at Prabal Gurung’s spring show in New York earlier this month, Peter Philips did the same at Fendi, and a gaggle of street style stars are matching their nail polish to their frocks. Lee used Chanel's Ombre Essentielle Soft Touch Eye Shadow ($29) in Amethyst on Keira Knightley at the premiere of Can A Song Save Your Life. She says that if you are going to try matching your makeup to your outfit, "go for a gentle hue and not a very dense application."
Emma Osborne, Rita Ora’s go-to makeup artist, used M.A.C.’s Lipmix ($15) in Fuchsia to get the same shade as Ora’s leather top.
It looked like Cate Blanchett’s blush was plucked straight from her Dior gown at a New York screening of Blue Jasmine. La Prairie’s Cellular Radiance Cream Blush ($70) in Plum Glow offers a similar flush.
At the Toronto Film Festival, makeup artist Melanie Inglessis used Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Liner ($23) in Diamond Aqua Blue to mirror Olivia Wilde’s printed dress.
Solange’s bold orange lipstick reflected the accents on her Prada dress at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. You can’t go wrong with M.A.C.’s Lipstick ($15) in Morange.
British makeup artist Wendy Rowe found a winning shade of pink lipstick to pair with Sienna Miller’s Dolce & Gabbana dress. (Try Burberry’s Lip Cover Soft Satin Lipstick ($30) in Blush No.9 for a similar look.)
Freida Pinto’s shimmering pink eyeshadow complements her slightly brighter Miu Miu dress in Venice. Rimmel’s Glam Eye Shadow Quad ($6) in Smokey Purple includes a similar color.
The charcoal gray on Lowe’s nails pops against her pale pink skirt while blending into her cozy sweater at London Fashion Week. Sephora’s Color Hit Nail Polish ($5) in Face Your Fears is the perfect match.
