To kick off the New Year, we’re running a series showcasing the skincare products top health and beauty experts are buying at Sephora. Each week, we’re sending one of our favorite gurus to their local store to document their entire shopping spree on Byrdie’s Snapchat. Make sure to tune in each Saturday to follow along, and check back here weekly to see (and shop!) the items that made it into their Sephora carts. Enjoy!
Let’s be honest: Shopping at Sephora is like being let loose in a beauty playground. With hundreds of different brands and products to choose from, how is a beauty lover supposed to stay on track?
The answer: Follow wellness guru Jordan Younger’s lead and go in with something specific (toner, face wash, etc.) on your shopping list. So what was on the Balanced Blonde blogger’s mind when we accompanied her to a Beverly Hills Sephora last weekend? “I’m headed to Bora Bora in a few weeks,” she told us. “I could use some new skincare products to get through the long travel days and to help hydrate my skin after being in the sun all day.” And with that, we started shopping…

When she’s not running or doing vinyasa yoga, Younger is busy updating her wellness blog and designing apparel for her activewear label, Truth Balance Virtue. The line incorporates fun, positive messages across shirts, sweatshirts, and bags that encourage people to live an active, healthy lifestyle. But her passion for wellness doesn’t end there: She tells us that taking care of your skin is just as important as taking care of your body.
Since Younger has oily skin that’s prone to acne and inflammation, she has to be particular about the items she uses. But one item she never skips is moisturizer. It's a common misconception that people with oily skin don't need to moisturize, but they do need to prevent dehydration—especially while traveling, like Younger. “I go for lightweight products that will be gentle on my skin,” she explains. “I like to try and choose things that would also sound appetizing if I was at a grocery store, meaning I gravitate toward the coconuts, vanillas, and nutrient-dense products that will work wonders on my skin.”
Younger’s advice when it comes to adding new skincare products to your daily routine? Start by figuring out your skin type. Once you’ve got that nailed down, make sure to choose products that work well with it and that you’ll be diligent about using (even on vacation)—which is exactly what she did on our Sephora trip.
First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer ($28)
As she walked through the aisles of swoon-worthy skincare products, Younger stumbled upon this pick from First Aid Beauty. “First of all, it’s called Coconut Skin Smoothie Primer Moisturizer,” she explained. “The word ‘smoothie’ had me hooked. I’m a huge fan of coconut because of its amazing hydrating abilities. It's also a 2-in-1 priming moisturizer, so it'll make a great, smooth base to my makeup look. I’m also hoping this will give me the added moisture my skin craves during these winter months and during my long travel days up ahead.”
In addition to the product’s moisturizing benefits, its light-reflecting micro pearls create a dewy finish. It’s perfect to use as a prep-step for long-lasting makeup or to wear alone for a natural glow. Basically, it's a great product to add to your carry-on to refresh your skin after a long flight.
Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream ($52)
Younger was also looking for an intense moisturizer to help hydrate her skin after being out under the Bora Bora sun. “I’ve heard that this Peter Thomas Roth cream is supposed to be great for combating dehydration,” she says. So what makes this product so unique? It visibly plumps fine lines and wrinkles while delivering a burst of hydration with hyaluronic acid. Not only that, but it’s a lightweight cream that’s fragrance-, oil-, and alcohol-free, which is ideal for Younger’s oily, sensitive skin.
After playing with a variety of products, Younger felt these two items were exactly what she was looking for, and it was time for the fun to come to an end. Just like that, she made her way to the register to pay for her new goods before heading to her Saturday yoga session. After all, vacation doesn’t start for another few weeks.
