All celebrity makeup artists have a slightly different strategy for applying the perfect bold lip, but nine times out of 10 it includes a matching lip liner. Why? “It makes everything easier,” makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani says. She swears by liner on clients like Sandra Bullock, Kirsten Dunst, and Julianne Moore. “You can control the shape of your lips better, whether it's minimizing them, making them appear fuller, or just evening them out.” Regardless of the color—bright or neutral—it’ll look more polished with liner. Bedrani suggests actually filling in the whole lip with the liner, instead of just the outline. Doing so won’t just give you the perfect shape, it also guarantees the pigment lasts longer and fades more evenly. To make it easy, we’ve matched up 10 liner and lipstick combinations, from beige to bright red, above.
