The Beauty Products That Broke the Internet in 2015
Kim Kardashian is known for a lot of things, not least of which includes her infamous Paper magazine cover of 2014. When the image first emerged, the Internet did what it does best: promptly freak out. Some outlets even went so far as to say the image of her bare, greased-up bottom “broke” the Internet—which, though a slight hyperbole, does kind of make sense. After all—ironies of ironies—never before had a print magazine set the Internet in such a tizzy (and yes, we said tizzy). Since then, nothing has quite set off the storm of comments, shares, and so many feelings as Kim’s bare bottom, but that’s not to say the Internet has been a quiet place full of calm discussion (LOL). On the beauty front, there have been a few products this year that have garnered shortness of breath and rapid-fire clicking—and Kylie’s Lip Kit is only one of them. Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Glow Palette ($34)
If you haven’t tried Becca Cosmetics Champagne Pop Highlighter ($38), it’s probably because it sold 25,000 units in the first 20 minutes it became available on Sephora.com. Thus, when the brand announced it would be releasing a limited-edition holiday palette featuring the buzzy hue and a lighter and copper shade, we predicted the Internet would be equally giddy—and we were right. The palette had a very short-lived life span on Sephora’s website—after which it was promptly snatched up and sold out. Luckily, you can still buy the cult-favorite original right here.
Lorac Mega PRO Palette 2 ($59)
The first version of this drool-worthy eye shadow palette from Lorac sold out in just one day (and as proud owners, we can attest the frenzy is worth it—the colors are so silky and blendable). The second reiteration followed suit, selling out so fast we could barely click “add to cart.”
MAC Cinderella Collection ($0)
A new MAC collaboration is always cause for celebration, and though we’re still waiting with bated breath for MAC x Selena to launch in 2016, this year it was all about Cinderella. Yes, the brand’s princess-themed collection sold out almost immediately—and then went on sale on eBay for five times the price. We have to say, the buzz was worth it—the Eye Gloss in particular earned our seal of approval.
Nails Inc Paint Can Spray Can Nail Polish ($0)
Nail polish… that you spray?! Be still, our hearts. When British-based brand Nails Inc released images of its revolutionary new product in action, the Internet freaked out—and the coveted spray can sold out in the UK shortly thereafter. It was a good year for Urban Decay, with the brand launching a number of products that made the general public counting down by their computers (this Gwen Stefani collab being one, the Naked Smoky being another). But none spurred as much of a spending frenzy as the Naked Vault 2, a giant vault of all four Naked Palettes, plus Naked Basics and Naked2 Basics for $165. Lest you think that price tag would be a deterrent, worry not—the Vault sold out almost instantly (and, much to our chagrin, has yet to be restocked).
When a makeup artist releases a product, you hope it’s good. When Pat McGrath releases a product, you know it’s going to be good—and pray to the beauty gods it doesn’t sell out before you can get your hands on it. If you didn’t immediately log onto PatMcGrath.com to snatch up her Gold 001 product, a gilded metallic pigment that delivers a liquid-like color wherever you swipe, then you probably missed it. The product sold out in just six minutes. Luckily Phantom 002 followed shortly thereafter, but that sold out in under an hour too. Whatever Pat touches turns to gold (literally, in this case)—and we’ll be eagerly awaiting her next shipment.
Tom Ford Lips & Boys Lipstick in Drake ($35)
Tom Ford released the first lust-worthy Lips & Boys in 2014 but added 25 new shades (or rather, boys) to the lineup this year—one of which happened to be Drake. What does Drake look like in lipstick form? A little mauve, a little purple, and a little metallic—and very much desirable. The shade sold out within minutes when it went on sale at Net-a-Porter, with no plans to restock. Cue the Drake crying meme. (You can always try to buy it on eBay, but as of now, prices start at $225.)
And of course, we couldn’t finish this list without the product that inspired it in the first place—Kylie Jenner’s controversy-filled Lip Kit. Jenner’s lips have been the topic of discussion for most of 2015, and a product line that promises to help you achieve a pout like hers seemed like the next logical step. Only problem is it sold out immediately—and the second batch did too.
