Hair Oil

Hair Oil: Your Mane's New Best Friend
Hair Oil
Hopefully we've assuaged any fears you might have about putting oil on your face --so let's talk hair. Unlike the Leonor Greyl Palm Oil ($50) that we've championed in the past, or your traditional once-a-week deep conditioning oils, this new generation of lighter formulas serve much the same purpose as face oils: to nourish, moisturize, and add shine (hair's version of a glow) on a daily basis. But the word "oil" is still so scary that we checked in with Mara Roszak, who regularly styles the locks of Emma Stone and Mila Kunis, for her expert take: "Hair oil doesn't just make a blow-dry ten times easier, it also helps protect the hair against damage from styling," Roszak says. "It coats the hair, adds shine, tames frizz and smoothes it, all while conditioning."The trick, of course, is to find the right one and use very little of it. Sachajuan's new Intensive Hair Oil ($45) is formulated to rebuild the hair's cuticle over time. In the meantime, the blend of rosemary, argan, buckthorn, and sunflower oil will add a visible amount of luster to your locks. Roszak's favorite is Josie Maran's Argan Hair Oil Serum ($30) because it's so lightweight and leaves your hair feeling soft, but she also recommends Davines' Absolute Beautifying Potion ($40) which, along with taming frizz, is full of antioxidants. Other winners? Dove's Nourishing Oil Care ($6) features calming almond oil and Rodin's Luxury Hair Oil ($65) smells divine.

So oil alone won't weigh down your hair, but can you layer it with other styling products? Roszak, who uses oil on her own long, blonde locks after every wash, says, "Start by using a bit on towel-dried hair, applying it to the ends and working it up, but staying away from the roots." Then add your root-lifting spray, volumizer, surf spray, or product of choice, and style as usual. You'll notice shinier, bouncier ends immediately, and if used regularly, the protective properties of most oils will even lengthen the time between cuts. Turns out oil's not so scary after all.
