The Best Beauty in Fall’s Fashion Ads

Want drama? Check out Michelle Williams for Louis Vuitton. Something sweeter? Valentino’s ad echoes the Dutch masters. And if you love the ‘80s, there’s always Versace! Campaigns feature the world’s best hair and makeup artists, so click through for a generous hit of inspiration.

This shall henceforth be known as the season of Christy Turlington. The supermodel is everywhere—and that’s a good thing. Legendary hairstylist Bob Recine gave Turlington slicked-back hair while Aaron de May played with shadows and contouring for Turlington’s smoldering Calvin Klein Underwear ads.

  • Valentino

Each season there’s an article about how the lines between art and fashion are increasingly blurred. Sure enough, Valentino’s fall campaign looks like it could hang in a museum thanks in huge part to Dick Page’s ethereal makeup and Christaan’s expert hairstyling.

  • Lanvin
    3 of 10

Hairstylist Guido Palau and makeup artist Pat McGrath got to whip up a slew of dramatic looks on British model Edie Campbell in honor of Lanvin’s variety show of a fall campaign. Which one’s your favorite?

  • Reed Krakoff
    4 of 10

When you’re working with Julianne’s Moore flawless skin and shiny locks, there’s not a lot of work to be done. But hairstylist Renato Campora and makeup artist Gucci Westman made the actress look positively angelic in her debut campaign for Reed Krakoff’s eponymous brand (shot at the French Embassy in New York, by the designer himself).

  • Louis Vuitton
    5 of 10

We’re not even waiting for fall to cop Michelle Williams’ bold look for Louis Vuitton. Stephane Marais framed her face with dramatic brows and painted Williams’ lips a rich shade of red. Not that Williams’ first endorsement should be her last, but we can’t imagine topping this.

  • Versace
    6 of 10

Makeup artist Lucia Peroni perfects the no makeup-makeup look on an unusually brunette Kate Moss in Versace’s fall images while Garren managed the perfect ‘80s flip. Note to blondes going dark for fall: contour!

  • Jason Wu
    7 of 10

Oh, hi again, Christy Turlington. The supermodel’s back (both on our list, and in fashion) for Jason Wu’s debut ads shot at the iconic Indochine restaurant in New York. Those curls? Courtesy of Christiaan. The pout? Thanks to Stila founder Jeanine Lobell.

  • Prada
    8 of 10

Prada’s campaign hair and makeup always matches the brand’s runway show—but we don’t mind seeing it again. It was Guido who convinced us wet hair was a thing worth trying in the first place. And we’ve been quite clear about our feelings toward the glossy eye—Pat McGrath painted Prada’s.

  • Balmain
    9 of 10

Balmain’s fall ads take matching your makeup to your outfit to the next level. Makeup artist Lisa Butler brushed shades of pink and purple across the model’s cheekbones, lips, and eyelids while Christiaan stuck to the brand’s love of the ‘80s with a disheveled side ponytail.

  • Oscar de la Renta

Even out of context, it’d be crystal clear that Norman Jean Roy’s images herald autumn thanks to the rich colors—complemented by makeup artist Gucci Westman’s handiwork—framed by artfully windswept locks by Orlando Pita. Apparently, a brick red lip looks best when heaped with jewels.
