Ask A Makeup Artist: How Can I Pull Off Dark Lips During Summer?
Ever have a makeup question that requires the expert guidance of a professional? Your prayers are answered. In our new Ask A Makeup Artist series, celebrity makeup artist Wendy Rowe (who’s worked with Sienna Miller, Olivia Wilde, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, to name a few) will tackle the burning beauty questions we all want the answers to.
How can I pull off a dark lip in the dead of summer without looking like I got ready during the wrong season?
Dark lips are a really strong beauty look—that’s why they’re usually associated with the heavier textures and structures of the colder months, but there are certain tweaks you can make to the look to make feel seasonally appropriate in the summer months.
Firstly, avoid one solid color. Instead, try more of an ombréd dark lip. Concentrate the dark color on the outer corners of the lips, and add a brighter shade to the center of your pout. This will really make your lips pop and give the look a lighter, fresher feel for summer.
Also, make sure the lipstick is matte—a high-gloss dark lip is just too high maintenance for summer. If you’re not sure what color to rock dark lips with, stick with the classic choice: red. Dark shades of red, like burgundy, with a touch of something brighter (like Burberry Beauty’s Lip Velvet Long Wear Lipstick ($30) in Military Red) in the center will never fail.
As for the rest of the makeup, keep it minimal. All you really need to pull off the look is lashes and lipstick. On the eyes, skip liner and shadow, in favor of a few generous coats of mascara. For the face, choose concealer over foundation, or use something with light coverage like BB cream or tinted moisturizer. And avoid anything with a matte finish. Summer’s dewy skin is the perfect complement to matte dark lips.
