Slicked-Back Hair vs. Beachy Waves: Which Will Rule This Summer?
Beach waves are synonymous with summer, but there's a new style that's giving the classic look a run for its money this season. We're talking about the sleek, slicked-back look we've seen it girls from Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner wear. It's a bolder look that is just as summer-worthy as tousled beach hair.
"This slicked-back look is super sleek and sexy. This style is a great trendy look for any special occasion, especially for an outdoor event where you would want your hair away from the face," says Joya Smith, corporate style director at Blo Blow Dry Bar. While we totally agree that the edgier look is ideal for summer, there's something about the messy cool-girl vibes wavy hair evokes. "This is a very popular, especially in the warmer weather," says Smith. "It flatters all face shapes and hair types, and most people can get a few days out of this style."
Only time will tell which style will ultimately rule the summer, but in the meantime, see how Gigi Hadid and Jessica Alba each recently styled their hair and decide for yourself. Keep scrolling to see the looks and find out how to get them at home.
"Start with clean, damp hair. Apply mousse from the roots down the hair shaft, and comb back away from the face. Use your blow-dryer with a nozzle—this gives you more control to dry the hair in the desired style. Once hair is completely dry and smooth, run a flatiron through to ensure a straight and smooth look. Make sure to apply a heat protectant before using a flatiron to avoid damaging the hair."
Unite Finishing "Tricky" Wax Spray ($22)
"To keep this style in place, you will need a wax spray or pomade I like Tricky Spray by Unite! Apply it from roots back to secure the slick style. Use a small-tooth comb if needed to smooth and slick back hair. Finish with a strong-hold hair spray and you are ready to go!"
"Start by prepping damp hair with a heat protectant and styling lotion. I personally like Unite Blow&Set sculpting lotion. Blow-dry hair using a round brush for a smooth finish. Then use a 1.5-inch wand or curling iron, and wrap hair around the barrel in small sections (between 1- and 1.5-inch pieces). The more space you leave in between each section of hair, the looser the wave will be. Alternate sections going away and toward the face to give a tousled look."
