If there’s one thing we can expect from the Teen Choice Awards, it’s all things bold and bright—especially when it comes to beauty. Which is why we were surprised when Shailene Woodley—who won Choice Movie Actress awards for both Drama and Action/Adventure—showed up glowing and bare-faced, nary a bright pigment in sight. “We wanted to keep Shailene’s makeup clean, and not competitive with her gorgeous and colorful Peter Pilotto dress,” makeup artist Roxy says. “Using monochromatic colors on her eyes and cheeks, I defined her features to make them pop, while not overwhelming her with color.” The overall effect? A clean, minimal, and surprisingly refreshing beauty look.
As big proponents of “no-makeup makeup” ourselves, we asked Roxy to share exactly what she used to give Woodley her “I woke up like this” glow. She started by spritzing Woodley’s face, neck, and décolletage with Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir Spray ($49), then used Tarte’s Clean Slate Flawless 12-Hour Brightening Primer ($30) to give her skin a subtle sheen. “Since color was not a big part of this look, I wanted to do more with sculpting, to bring out her beautiful features,” Roxy says. She used Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Matte Waterproof Bronzer ($30) in Park Ave Princess to contour Woodley’s cheekbones, applying it right under her cheeks and at her temples. And for her soft, petal lipstick? Woodley herself applied the brand’s LipSurgence Matte Lip Tint ($24) in Hope, straight from the pen. A natural, barely-there look on the red carpet? A bold beauty move, if there ever was one.
