Selena Gomez Inspires Women as She Battles Lupus
Selena Gomez has been a megastar since the age of 7, and with that comes the trolling of paparazzi and endless commentary dedicated to tearing down any amount of self-esteem that’s managed to stick. While it’s NEVER okay in our book to go negative on another person, the world didn’t know Gomez has been suffering from lupus—a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs.
Despite Gomez undergoing chemotherapy as she battles the life-threatening illness, she opened up to Billboard magazine about her disturbing reality. Gomez faced attacks extending beyond predictable paparazzi; actual peers slammed her on social media, Gomez says: "I was in a bikini and got publicly ripped for being overweight." She continued, "That was the first time I’d experienced body shaming like that. I believed some of the words they were saying.”
The anxiety grew to a point where the singer didn’t want to be in public. She shared, “I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again.” What would be enough for most of us to hide indoors healthy or otherwise, Gomez ultimately turned into her biggest strength saying, "The hate motivated me." But Gomez isn’t alone; she notes that gal pal Taylor Swift helped empower her to return to the spotlight.
Selena Gomez currently serves as the spokesperson for Pantene. This interview makes us wonder if she had any input on the naming of their latest products like Full And Strong Power Up Daily Treatment ($7). We wouldn’t be surprised if the hair-care collaboration happens to be her witty way of overcoming haters. That kinda just makes us like her more.
