Sally Hershberger 24K Vanity Hair Shaping Balm ($32)

I’ve been using the same hair product on my curls for years now. But who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth? The minimal packaging, the blatant luxury factor (it’s formulated with gold and says so right on the label), and the fact that Sally Hershberger created it—made this recently launched hair offering too tempting to toss off my desk. So I tried it. I swirled my fingers around in the putty-like texture and applied the formula right to my ends.

The first thing that struck me was the scent—a mix of cucumber and fresh laundry—and then the velvety-soft texture. The product is recommended to mold and hold short hairstyles, but I had a feeling it would work really well to create that piece-y texture I covet so much. Turns out I was right. It has the shaping and shine benefits of a traditional wax but the flexibility of a pomade. And, because it’s made with soy protein and natural plant extracts, there’s no weird, waxy residue.

The formula smoothes frizz and split ends (#hallelujah) but doesn’t weigh down my curls or decrease the volume. I like big hair, after all. It takes my often-puffy strands and creates definition and dimension. Color me surprised. This little pot is a welcome addition to my medicine cabinet.
