Ruffles

Plenty of fall trends are high on drama, but the one that had front-row attendees buzzing this season? Ruffles! An explosion of extravagant frills embellished everything from peplum jackets to sheath dresses, and got us wondering how to adopt the look for our everyday style. Though frills are undoubtedly romantic and feminine, they don't have to be fussy. Just read today's story to find out how to translate runway-inspired ruffles in real life!On The Runway
Designers were certainly out to ruffle some feathers-sartorially speaking, that is-in their F/W 12 collections. Lanvin and Alexander McQueen offered exaggerated, the bolder-the-better ruffles; while the former's show ended with a tiered peplum jacket and pencil skirt, the latter offered a structured, sci-fi take in the form of a shoulder-baring dress. Oversized ruffles adorned the Cream Wool Skirt ($1300, 305.531.4653) at Sacai for a statement-making look paired with the Light Grey Cashmere Sweater ($1250,949.642.4423), and Emporio Armani aimed for a whimsical vibe with a floral ruffle-accented Dress ($2395), and matching Shorts ($545) and Hat ($145).

On Celebs
While ruffles on the runway were appropriately dramatic, model Coco Rocha demonstrated how to tone down the trend in real life, while still playing up its romantic, feminine qualities. At the Destination Iman launch party in New York earlier this month, Rocha paired a vintage blouse with a Rag & Bone vest, a belt from a market in Beijing, and Proenza Schouler trousers. Though her high-neck top sports a cascade of luxurious frills, Rocha's menswear-inspired vest and pants grounds the look and prevents it from feeling fussy!

On You/Dresses & Skirts
Ready to try ruffles on your own? There are plenty of options, especially when it comes to easy, slip-on-and-go dresses. For daytime, we suggest Blu Moon's Ruffle Dress ($152) or BB Dakota's Tasha Printed Maxi Dress ($128). You can't go wrong with these breezy, printed frocks with ruffles at the hem! If you're looking for more formal attire, however, try a cocktail number like BCBGMAXAZRIA's Harmonie Ruffled Dress ($158) or Lanvin's Structured Ruffle Taffeta Dress ($3285). We're also partial to ruffled skirts: Creatures of the Wind's Ruffled-Hem Plaid Woven Wool Skirt ($595) is well-suited for the boardroom, while ASOS' Mini Skirt With Ruffle Hem ($52) is ready for a night on the town!

On You/Tops
To replicate Rocha's ensemble, all you need is a ruffled top-and thankfully, there's an endless selection for fall in a variety of colors and fabrics. Lauren Ralph Lauren's Mandelle Ruffled Blouse ($80), a crisp white button-down reworked with a few pretty frills, is a chic everyday option. But if you're bold enough to try more voluminous ruffles, go for Ralph Lauren Blue Label's Jennifer Ruffle Top ($245) in Cream. Add a punch of color with either DKNY's Long Sleeve Ruffle Front Blouse ($255) or Anna Sui's Ruffled Georgette Blouse ($260). Just be sure to style these tops with borrowed-from-the-boys separates, like Rocha's vest and pants!--Tiffany Tse
