First Look: Pür Cosmetics Velvet Matte Liquid Lipsticks
If any beauty product is having a moment right now, it’s matte liquid lipsticks. Partly thanks to Kylie Jenner’s Internet-breaking Lip Kits ($29) and partly due to Kylie Jenner’s actual lips (we’ll never tire of marveling), matte liquid lipstick is the new golden child of the beauty industry. Why use your boring, traditional lipstick when you can coat your lips in rich pigment that dries to a budge-free, super-matte finish?
But here’s the caveat: matte liquid lipsticks can be incredibly drying. Depending on your annoyance threshold, this can deter you from using them at all (there’s only so long you can go feeling like you have dried paint on your lips), or only save them for special occasions. But technology only keeps getting better, and it seems every day a new crop of matte liquid lipsticks emerges, each one promising more than the last. Thus, we were thrilled when Pür Cosmetics gave us the exclusive first look at their new Velvet Matte Liquid Lipsticks ($20). (These lippies don’t actually launch until next year, but they’re doing a limited pre-sale right now to appease everyone’s matte obsession.)
How do these lippies stack up against the rest? We took them for a spin—keep scrolling to read our review, as well as find an exclusive discount code just for Byrdie readers!
First, the packaging. The liquid lipsticks come housed in sleek, clear tubes with silver caps emblazoned with a kiss mark not unlike Jenner's own. The wand is a tapered doe foot applicator, which is always the best kind of applicator; the flat side helps you apply over the larger surface of your lips, and the pointed tip allows you to line them with precision. The scent is slightly sweet and vaguely fruity—not overbearing in the slightest, and nothing too off-putting. It smells slightly like Sweet Tarts.
Now, onto the main event: the formula. Some matte liquid lipsticks feel like you're coating your lips in Wite-Out right when you apply; others are sticky at first before drying down to a super-matte finish. Pür Cosmetics' lippies are neither of these things. The airy, mousse-like formula goes on light as a feather, and the applicator makes it incredibly easy to apply the formula evenly. One coat should do the trick, but if you want a more saturated lip color, the formula is easily buildable. And then, the magic happens. Your lips will feel…nothing. Nada. No paint-like finish, or stickiness or goopiness. Instead, you'll feel just the slightest hint of a mousse-like product on your lips, but that's it. (Here's what they look like on blogger Jessi Malay's lips.) We've honestly tried lip balms that feel more noticeable.
The lippies are made with a silicone blend to condition and plump the lips, as well as perfecting powders to fill in fine lines and give a extra-matte finish. Other ingredients include fruits extracts like apple, raspberry, blackberry, and grapefruit to nourish (which may also explain the fruity scent), as well as something called Tetrapeptide-14, which the brand says is an "anti-inflammatory that soothes the lips." In other words, it's filled with ingredients that actually soothe and, dare we say, moisturize your lips. A matte liquid lipstick. That moisturizes. We know—it doesn’t make sense, but it’s true. We tried them. Oh, and did we mention they're gluten and paraben-free?
The whole Byrdie team tested these lipsticks and we were thoroughly impressed with the color pay-off, silky-smooth finish (it makes even dry, flaky lips look smooth), and comfortable, non-drying feel. As for longevity, they're not the most budge-proof; we recommend allowing the lipstick to dry for about 10 to 20 minutes on your lips before attempting to chow down on a burger or salad (or just make sure to reapply after). To really increase the long-lasting wear, try this technique: apply one layer, wait 10 minutes, then apply another layer. Allow this final layer to dry for another 10 minutes, and you'll notice that the formula won't smudge or smear as easily. If possible, we recommend avoiding messy meals while wearing the darker shades, which are prone to smudging more noticeably. They may not be the most long-lasting or budge-proof, but that's a small price to pay for the remarkably light formula.
The 10 shades range from a deep, moody plum (About Last Night) to a soft nude-pink (Oh Bae). If you're looking for a taupe, brown-ish, Kylie Jenner-approved shade, you'll want to try FBF, which is the perfect caramel-brown.
And because we love these lippies so much and want you to enjoy them yourself, Pür Cosmetics is giving you an exclusive discount code for 25% off the purchase price of $20. All you need to do is submit your email below to see the code:
