Staring at Your Phone Right Now? You Need This Yoga Move
We’ll spare you the lecture on smartphone addiction, but we can agree it’s real and we’re all guilty of it, to some extent. In fact, you’re probably reading this on your phone right now, aren’t you? And your posture is suffering because of it. Forward-hanging shoulders? Tight neck? Check and check. Keep reading to find out how to fix it with one simple yoga pose!
Wellness expert Dr. Frank Lipman says the best way to reverse your Instagram-induced posture problem is with fish pose, also known as matsyasana. “It’s a great move to strengthen the back, open the chest, and stretch the abdomen,” Dr. Lipman says. Grab your yoga mat (we’re obsessed with YogaSmoga’s The YS Mat, $54 right now) and get ready to stand taller.
1. Lie on your back, legs together, feet flexed.
2. Make fists with your hands and bend your elbow. On an inhalation, press your elbows down into the ground, and lift your chest up high, so you can gently place the top of your head on the floor.
3. Place your palms down flat on the floor and squeeze your shoulder blades together to lift your chest even higher. You should feel a nice stretch in your neck and chest.
4. Point your toes, and breathe. Stay here for a few breaths, and then gently lower yourself back to the ground. Rest for a moment, and repeat.
How much time would you guess you spend looking at your phone a day?
