Every holiday season, the folks at Pantone tell us exactly which hue will be trending the following year. But 2016 is looking to be extra colorful: For the first time ever, the company announced two shades as the ones to watch. Drumroll, please:

Up first we have Rose Quartz—a hue we probably could have predicted ourselves, since it's basically a softer take on fall's rust craze. But one of the things we really love about this pick is its crystal inspiration: Rose Quartz is known as "the stone of love," and is believed to aid in letting go of negative emotions, making room for more positive vibes.

In a more practical sense, the beauty of this color is its versatility. An easy way to incorporate it into your routine is to add a pretty flush to your cheeks and lips. But our favorite approach? Pick a shimmery eyeshadow in the hue for a an unexpected, mesmerizing take on the smoky eye.

Color #2 is Serenity—an aptly-named calm, periwinkle blue. This shade doesn't quite have the same beauty mileage as Rose Quartz, but that's not to say you can't get some use out of it: It's a great nail color, for example, or try swiping on some liquid liner for a more high-impact look.

Curious about why Pantone opted for two tones this year? "There is a certain 'fluidity' to the color combination as they are balanced tones of both warm and cool qualities," explains executive director Leatrice Eiseman to PopSugar. "These are qualities that are recognized by both men and women as both sexes are embracing the combination more readily. It also speaks to a generation that is less concerned about the stereotypical view of color and applying them with a new and more open approach." Hear, hear.
