The first rule of being a makeup addict: Never say no to a neutral eye shadow palette. What is justly described as the most banal group in the color wheel somehow becomes the most exciting when applied to eye shadow. Case in point: Present any living, breathing female with an eye shadow palette filled with neat little rows of taupe, Champagne, and chocolate-y shadow pods, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find one that doesn’t gasp (or shriek) in delight. (As a beauty editor, I can attest to this firsthand.) The powers of these palettes know no bounds—they can erase signs of a late night, widen and lift your eyes while making it look like you’re not wearing any makeup, and help you channel your sultrier side—all with just a few well-placed strokes (and lots of blending).

Though Urban Decay’s Naked Palette ($54) is considered the Holy Grail and continues to break the Internet in all of its iterations, there are plenty of other shimmering, silky, blendable palettes out there just begging to be used and swatched. Thus, when three of them landed on my product-strewn desk, I took it upon myself to do just that.
