Why Are So Many Women Googling This Plastic Surgery Procedure?
Kayla Seah of Not Your Standard
Recently, research revealed the exact plastic surgery procedures women most prevalently requested in each state. Now, the Plastic Surgery Portal compiled data behind the most searched surgeries and treatments by state as compared to the national search volume in Google. And guess what? They're not entirely similar—which means women are searching procedures that differ from the ones they're actually requesting.
Many of the same procedures are grouped together geographically, which is interesting, and, after some thought, not entirely surprising. The body parts which we choose to enhance can be correlated with the weather, the local trends, and the expertise of the doctor's available. No matter how you look at it, it's fascinating. The highest volume of searches in this region are for liposuction, with laser hair removal coming in second place. NYC-based plastic surgeon, Melissa Doft, attributes this to a New Yorker's preference for minimal downtime and subtle, natural-looking changes. Plus, they're always on the go. Liposuction may remove hours from your gym routine while hair removal keeps your weekly routine quick and efficient.
It's not entirely surprising the West Coast Googles breast implants more than other parts of the country. It's the home of the A-List and the industry, after all. Plus, the weather is much warmer in these states, presenting even more opportunity to show off your curves.
Breast implants tops the search list for Midwesterners as well, which speaks to their popularity nationally. According to Doth, breast augmentation procedures are the most searched, requested, and performed surgery. Coming in second is eyelid surgery, which Doth thinks comes from the fact that thin skin tends to sag and wrinkle earlier in dry, colder climates—leading to more lidding around the eyes.
The southern states mostly searched for liposuction and lip injections. "There's definitely a parallel between Southern food and the prevalence of interest in liposuction. With more fried food and heavier diets, I can imagine southerners looking into easier ways to lose stubborn fat," Doth says. Jennifer Walden, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Austin, Texas, adds, "People don’t walk like in the Northeast, they drive—there are a lot of fast food chains and drive-throughs."
