This Popular NYC Facial Could Put Plastic Surgeons out of Business
Nothing beats a great facial: Refreshed skin and the no-filter glow that comes with the complexion-boosting treatment makes this experience one of our favorites. But if you visit NYC's most in-demand esthetician, Shamara Bondaroff of SB Skin, you can add plumped skin and a contoured jawline to the list thanks to her Insta-famous microcurrent facial.
We've heard about the celebrity-approved "mini facelift" before, but SB Skin is getting a ton of buzz with its It-girl clientele, which includes Hannah Bronfman, Emily Weiss, and model Emily DiDonato, to name a few. The only facial on Bondaroff's menu is her signature 50-minute face workout that is conducted using two wands, and it sure makes a case for ditching invasive anti-aging procedures and injectables. We chatted with NYC's skincare guru on all things microcurrent, why it's the noninvasive, anti-aging treatment her clients seek out, and her golden rules of skincare.

Bondaroff stumbled upon the use of microcurrents—the technology that uses weak electrical currents to speed up cell production and repair—after experiencing a treatment herself. "After one session, I was hooked and kind of became obsessed," she explains. "I wanted a machine for my personal use, but then realized I had to go to school for it." She enrolled in classes to become an esthetician and made it her mission to share the holistic, noninvasive approach to an anti-aging treatment.
The Brooklyn-based NYC native explains that a microcurrent facial at SB Skin is essentially a workout for your face that results in gorgeously plumped and taut skin in under one hour. In other treatments, microcurrent is typically an add-on, but it's the foundation of Bondaroff's signature facial, and it's used for most of the 50-minute treatment. "Microcurrent uses electricity to stimulate the facial muscles," she says. "I administer the current with metal prongs, each shaped to manipulate and stimulate the facial muscles and skin in a targeted way." The process not only teaches muscles to tighten, resulting in a lifted look, but it also stimulates collagen to accelerate cell turnover and leaves skin glowing. Bondaroff uses Nuori products—an all-natural Danish skincare brand—and an ultrasonic scrubber to exfoliate skin during the treatment. There's also a calming 10-minute LED light therapy session built into the treatment, which boosts the facial's anti-aging effects. After one treatment, you can say goodbye to dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines, and hello to a lifted, contoured face that's ready for a no-filter selfie.

Bondaroff is confident about the results a microcurrent facial can yield and doesn't see the need to add any other facial treatments to her menu at this time. "Our clients see such fantastic results because we really take our time and have perfected our technique to make each microcurrent session as effective as possible," she tells us. "[Microcurrent] does so much for every age group, so why confuse people with a menu of so many [options] when we have one that does so much?" It's no wonder NYC girls are clamoring to get an appointment at her Manhattan location.
We asked Bondaroff about her rules for the best skin of your life, and she narrowed it down to four that she swears by. The first is sunscreen: "Shockingly, I still come across many people who don’t wear it on a regular basis." Next, drink water and limit coffee and alcohol. "I see so many young girls who come in because they feel their skin looks dull, and it's because they are totally dehydrated," she explains. The third is cutting out dairy if you suffer from breakouts. "I was raised vegan and haven't had dairy in years, and it should be the first thing to go if you have any breakouts." Last but not least is to clean your cell phone regularly. "It's the new 'wash your hands,'" she says. "Use an alcohol pad or even white wine vinegar, and wipe down both sides of your phone."
