Matte's in for Fall--Here's How to get The Texture
Step 1: Moisturize
Adding a shine-reducing daytime moisturizer will prep your skin for makeup by absorbing oil. Try Caudalie’s Vinosource Moisturizing Matifying Fluid ($39) or La Roche-Posay’s new Effaclar MAT Daily Moisturizer ($31)—the latter pulls double-duty by tightening pores, too! Super attached to your lotion? Apply Philosophy’s Total Matteness Serum ($40) beforehand.
Step 5: Set Skin
Again, you have options. Dust Maybelline’s Dream Matte Powder Compact ($8) or Jouer’s Mattifying Translucent Powder ($30) over skin for a powdery finish, or try a makeup-setting spray. Dior’s new Airflash Matte Touch ($49) and NYX’s Matte Finish Make Up Setting Spray ($8) both soak up oil and mattify without covering your makeup.

Bonus Step: Keep it Matte!
Now that you’ve created a shine-free complexion—keep it that way! Urban Decay’s De-Slick Mattifying Powder ($32) is a sheer, lavender-tone formula that blends into makeup on the go. Laura Mercier’s Secret Finish Mattifying Gel ($27) may look like primer, but it’s actually meant to be patted onto skin over makeup for mid-day touch-ups. Or try our office favorite: Tatcha Blotting Papers ($12).
We’ve been talking about matte skin for a while, but now that fall is officially here, it’s time to go shine-free. Need convincing? It might be easier to list the F/W 13 shows that didn’t feature matte skin than those that did. Just about everyone—Lanvin, Thakoon, Balmain, Chanel, Dior—ditched illuminator in lieu of opaque, but still healthy-looking skin. It’s easy to get the look if you’re armed with the right tools—all of which you’ll find in our step-by-step guide.
