How to Eat, Work Out, and Beautify Like an Australian It Girl
Today Clinique launches #FaceForward, a new global campaign encouraging women to look toward the future, set goals, and achieve their aspirations—i.e., put their best faces forward. Who better to spearhead the campaign than trailblazing young women known for making waves in their industries, women who exemplify their generation’s penchant for motivating and inspiring others—women like Margaret Zhang. We jumped at the chance to chat with the Australian It girl responsible for the style blog Shine by Three. As a multitasking stylist, writer, photographer, and creative director, she is, it’s safe to say, a superpower in the making. (And she does it all with pretty fantastic skin.)

What’s the best beauty advice that’s been passed down to you from previous generations?
Zhang: A well-rounded diet. Everyone always says, ‘Oh, Asian skin is so amazing, it must be genetic.’ And I think it is to a point, but if you look at Chinese diets and Japanese diets, they always eat different types of food. There’s always some protein, some healthy fat, legumes, and some kind of carbohydrate—keeping it balanced. So I think having a well-rounded diet and being regularly conscious about what you’re putting in your body makes a difference beauty-wise. Australians too are really about real health—exercising, healthy diets—that internal stuff reflects on the skin; it’s super important.
What workouts do you incorporate into that healthy Australian lifestyle?
Zhang: I like running, and I’ve started to do a lot more Pilates. I was doing Bikram yoga for a while, but I think that’s a little too harsh for me. But hot yoga is good because it actually forces you to drink a lot more water than you think you’re capable of drinking. I definitely don’t think I drink the recommended amount of water a day, but something like that kind of forces me to drink more. I mix it up too with swimming.
Can you tell us a little bit about your makeup routine?
Zhang: I feel like it's taken a long time to figure out what makeup works the best for me. I grew up training to be a ballet dancer, so all of that makeup was super heavy, not that fun. I don’t really wear a whole lot of makeup during the day, but when I do, I’ll brush out my eyebrows and then add a little highlighter. For a while, I was doing kind of a liquid-eyeliner cat-eye situation, but I’m disastrous at getting the line even on both sides—even with a business card. I tried all those Pinterest hacks, but it just wasn’t meant to be. So I just started doing more of just a smudgy, darkish eyeliner all the way around the eye. Which normally I wouldn’t do because of my Asian eyes, because when you smile, under-eye makeup smudges everywhere, but if it’s already smudgy, then it kind of works out.
