6 Things Every NYC Girl Has in Her Makeup Bag
It's already been established that L.A. and NYC girls have different philosophies when it comes to beauty. While a West Coast gal may opt for winged liner on a first date, NYC girls prefer to keep their looks more low key. There's no right or wrong way to approach makeup, and everyone's personal aesthetic contributes to the ever-changing beauty trends. So what makeup products are New Yorkers loving at the moment? We talked to six of them, and one thing is for sure: These ladies always have their favorite highlighter on hand, and a bold lip is a quintessential accessory.
Keep scrolling to learn how these NYC girls approach makeup and their current must-have products.
Favorite thing about makeup: "I love how makeup has the ability to give me an alter-ego. When I am wearing red lipstick on a shoot, I feel sexy. When I have a clean fresh face, I feel pretty. When I have a golden glow, I become a total beach babe! It is kind of a reflection of my personality in that moment."
Current favorite: "Glossier Boy Brow fills in my eyebrows to give them a fuller, thicker, cleaner look. This stuff is magic!"
Other makeup bag staples: "Dior Diorskin Airflash Spray Foundation in #301 Sand ($62) makes my skin look a little matte but also glowy. It does wonders as a base before bronzer. Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Natural ($42) is an amazing bronzer that gives me that golden beach-babe tan I love. I use this Bobbi Brown Lipliner Pencil in Nude ($23) as a full lip color, and I am kind of hooked on it! The mix of it with my skin tone comes out more as a mauve color."
Makeup philosophy: "I believe makeup should enhance the real you, and I try to use as much natural and organic as possible. Plus, I want my skin to breath. I think too much face makeup, like a lip and an eye and heavy contouring, is the opposite of modern."
Favorite thing about makeup: "I love anything new. I love being able to transform myself in the mornings from a tired, grumpy monster to a semi–fresh-faced beauty enthusiast. I also love that it brings such a modern and positive group of women (and men) together. The way we look at makeup has changed so much, and it's always evolving. I love looking back on what was popular in past decades and looking to other cultures to see what they value in terms of makeup. I was just in Japan, and it was so interesting to hear what some of my Japanese friends said about their no-makeup makeup techniques and their love for lashes."
Current favorite: "For sure, RMS Beauty Master Mixer ($38). It gives this warm, rose color glow, and I use it to enhance my cheekbones."
Other makeup bag staples: "My number one is RMS Beauty. I use like all of the pots. I use two different colors of "Un" Cover-Up ($36 each) for concealing and foundation, the Living Luminizer ($38), of course, and her cream blushes.
"I also LOVE red lip or a good stain. I really like those pH-balanced pinky lip colors, too. My favorite is the one by Smashbox, and Milk Makeup has some really good lip stains. I stick to pinks and reds. Tom Ford and Charlotte Tilbury make the best matte lipsticks.
"As a general rule, I am all about perfect skin paired with a lip. YSL Touche Éclat ($42) is so good, and I like the neutralizing collection. Clearly I love anything that brightens and conceals. Sometimes I'll do like a goth black-red lip, but that's only if I feel really confident that day.
"[I use] Eyeko and Dior for liquid liners and mascara. I also always look for a super-thick lash-thickening mascara. Oh, and fake lashes. I used to get lash extensions, but I needed to give my poor lashes a break. I found some really good fake ones in Japan at the drugstore by Dolly Wink."
Makeup philosophy: "Less is more! As much as I would like to be the "more is more" kind of girl, in most cases, it just doesn't work out that way for me. I usually don't have a ton of time to spend on my makeup, so I'm all about the no-makeup makeup trend. I spend more time properly setting my base with foundation, concealer, a well-groomed brow, and mascara. If I have an extra five minutes or so, I'll intensify with sweeps of blush, highlighter and a sultry muted nude lip color."
Favorite thing about makeup: "I absolutely adore what makeup can do to boost self-confidence. Too often, I hear people make it seem as if you are hiding behind something or trying too hard if you are wearing makeup. I feel the total opposite. I can sometimes stare at makeup tutorial videos for hours because I'm so inspired by all the fun you can have with enhancing what's already naturally yours. You can play it up, you can play it down, but overall there is just a fun factor that makes me feel free and comfortable with shamelessly showing off the skin I'm in. Makeup can be quite liberating when you allow yourself to just play and have fun with it."
NYX Double Stacked Mascara ($15)
Current favorite: "Talk about game changer! How about life changing? I love the look of faux lashes, but my application skills are hit or miss. This mascara gives me the look of false lashes, and it is totally goof-proof. You start with the mascara base topcoat, then apply the nylon lash fibers, and finish again with the mascara. I promise in about two minutes, you'll have a gorgeous doll-like flutter you'll never want to take off."
Other makeup bag staples: "Anastasia Brow Wiz ($21) helps me flawlessly bring the bomb-factor out of my brows in an instant! It's super easy to use and gives me a lot of control when filling in my faint arches. I also really admire that there is a spoolie attached to help me perfectly blend. Plus, it's retractable so I don't always have to go searching for a sharpener.
"Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Flush ($7) is what I would call somewhat of a 'newbie but goodie.' I started playing with this lovely hue a few months ago, and now it pretty much comes with me wherever I go. I absolutely love that it glides on like a cream, unlike most drying mattes, but sets as a fresh vibrant matte that barely needs to be touched up throughout the day.
"For this to be packaged in such a small tube, let me tell you, Cover Fx Cream Concealer ($27) really packs one heck of punch when it comes to coverage. On those days when I have to apply my makeup in the back of cab or on a bumpy subway ride, it doesn't take much for a few pea-sized drops of this stuff to wake my face up and erase any little imperfections that need to be quickly concealed on the go."
Makeup philosophy: "My approach is very minimal, so I have a very basic skincare routine. I put on a touch of makeup with a bright lip and I'm good to go!"
Favorite thing about makeup: "I love color. My favorite accessory is a bright lip."
Jouer Mermaid Glow Palette ($44)
Current favorite: "I've always been obsessed with the Jouer the cream blushes and highlighters, so I'm dying over the new glow palette."
Other makeup bag staples: "I love Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara, and I always finish with a bright red lip. Love Flower Lip Suede Velvet Lip Chubby in Red-dy to Bloom ($8)—I even wore this lip color at my wedding!
"I also love the Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Pencil ($21)— I swear by that product for my brows. In the summertime, I use Flower Glisten Up Highlighter Chubby in Pearl Shimmer ($10) for an extra glow."
Makeup philosophy: "I've had the same makeup routine since I was 14. I've been using foundation, probably before most girls even knew what foundation was. I can't leave the house without putting it on, and I love Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation ($48). I follow it up with blush and a little Benefit Dallas Dusty Rose Face Powder ($29). I line my eyes with a black liner and a pinch of mascara, and finish things off with a pop of lip color, typically red matte or pink."
Favorite thing about makeup: "The way it can wake up your whole face. Just a touch of lipstick transforms the way you look and how other people view you—and can dress up almost any outfit. Red and pink lipstick has been my signature look, and it really makes me feel sophisticated and put together, even if I'm rocking dirty Converse and ripped jeans."
Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Red Square ($26)
Current favorite: "I love lipstick, and I'm loving the Red Square lip crayon from Nars. I've had to buy it in bulk because I wear it so frequently. It stays on my lips for an entire day, and I never have to reapply it. Plus I love the matte quality to it."
Other makeup bag staples: "I LOVE the Benefit Porefessional Face Primer ($31). I never thought I had a large pore issue until I tried this. It literally makes your skin look airbrushed. I also love Sisley Black Rose Cream Masque ($162). It makes my face feel so soft and your face smells like roses all day."
Makeup philosophy: "Consistent and clean."
Favorite thing about makeup: "The artistry aspect and it not being size-specific."
Current favorite: "PMG labs! I'm obsessed with Skin Fetish 003; it's the best highlighter ever."
Other makeup bag staples: "Giorgio Armani foundation. It feels expensive and is breathable. Also, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner ($22) is a classic—it has the best felt brush and is long-lasting."
