The Trick for Lily James's Soft Romantic Waves

Mary Peffer

We may be in the middle of Utah’s Sundance Film Festival, but that didn’t stop us from noticing one big beauty moment right here in Los Angeles. Behold Lily James’s perfectly coiled loose—but not too loose—red carpet waves at the premiere of her new film, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Knowing there had to be some industry trick to keeping curls this soft yet structured and (perhaps most importantly) in place all evening long, we asked the woman behind James’s waves, celebrity hairstylist Ashley Streicher, for her secret.

The trick is simpler than you might think. Ashley explained, “After I curled her whole head, I used a vent brush to break up and stretch out the curls. Leonor Greyl Voluforme ($36) spray held them in place.”

Ashley’s sister and partner at Beverly Hills salon Striiike, Jenn Streicher, created Lily’s subtle but sultry makeup look. Jenn kept the skin dewy and natural with Votre Vu Love Me Deux Moisture Tint & Concealer ($43) but added a pop of color on the lip.

“Lily’s dress was nude, which meant we wanted a statement lip. And she’s so young that I wanted to make sure the color was modern. We went with an orange-red, Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution in 1975 Red (32),” Jenn explained.
