Career Code: Kristie Streicher Will Give You Business Advice (and Perfect Brows)
In honor of Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power’s new book, The Career Code: Must-Know Rules for a Strategic, Stylish, and Self-Made Career ($17), we’re running an interview series featuring 17 questions (in honor of the book’s 17 chapters) about the work lives of the most inspirational female leaders in the beauty industry.
It's no surprise that I'm an absolute brow maniac. I hold my two eye-framing, bushy strips of hair closer to my heart than most things (#truth). So, it couldn't have been more exciting, inspiring, fun—you name it—to interview Kristie Streicher about her process.
The self-made girl boss (she is the co-owner of Striiike, a beauty and creative space in Beverly Hills she shares with her sisters, Jenn and Ashley), trademarked the "Feathered Brow," which is a mixture of tapered feathering and Streicher’s delicate sculpting technique. The results? That ever-elusive lush brow that is full, natural, and downright exquisite. Streicher has a ton of tricks up her sleeve, including her signature, hand-mixed blend of all-natural essential oils (lavender, tangerine, orange, and ylang ylang). It's a creation she has been keeping on hand for 15 years for hundreds of satisfied clients. You see, the secret is in the concoction—if you apply it pre-tweeze, the treatment is virtually painless.
See what I mean? Streicher knows her salt. And, if you go in and see her, she'll get to know your brows better than you do. Keep scrolling for some truly great insight from Kristie Streicher herself.
"Feathered eyebrow specialist."
"As people progress in their career path, sometimes it's easy to lose sight of the original passion for one's craft. I think what people would find most surprising is that I still don't think of it as a job. I enjoy it as much now as a did when I was developing my career pathway. I, and my entire staff, still have fun every day doing what we love."
"Gosh, it was so long ago (I was 14). I do not remember, however, for as long as I can remember, I have always been into fashion, loved 'getting dressed,' and had a style of my own."
"Because I only tweeze the brows, light is so important. If I can include anyone in this world or beyond, I would love to meet with Thomas Edison and collaborate on a light bulb—maybe one that harnesses the energy and light from the sun, that uses and illuminates natural sunlight."
"I love seeing what designers and artist create on the runway, but more than anything it's people watching while walking the streets of different cities. I was just recently in Korea and the girls definitely have a unique style of their own that I truly admired. Also, here in L.A., my sisters and even our clients keep me current and inspired."
"I really had to think about this one because I truly believe that everything happens for a reason at the time it is supposed to. I tend to overthink things, so learning to trust my instincts and listening to my gut is something I have learned (and is a constant struggle for me), but I'm working on it!"
"[Someone who] shares a similar eyebrow aesthetic, shares a similar vision and has goals, is hard-working, driven, committed, and confident."
"A beautiful vintage dress (paired with great heels), because I know its one of a kind!"
"Totally committed to client satisfaction, very hard-working, fair, pretty funny, occasionally impatient, and sensitive."
"Go go for a hike, walk, or run to be one with nature."
"I think it's always hard to say goodbye and walk away from something you put time and energy into, but I think being honest with yourself and your fellow employees/employer is always best."
"Thanks to the healthy and convenient recipe delivery service Purple Carrot, I cook dinner at least twice a week, so I try to bring leftovers for lunch. When I can’t, we use Postmates Pop which delivers in minutes for just $2.99 from all of our favorite places: Cafe Gratitude, Clementine, Gracias Madre, Kreation, and even Coolhaus Shop.
"For entry-level employees, the most common mistake is expecting professional respect without putting in the necessary time to earn it. For my peers, it's expecting return business based only on previous business (forgetting you always have to earn return business in this very competitive environment)."
"@jr is my current favorite. This artist’s true identity is actually a mystery, but this dude hangs out of helicopters and dangles off cranes, all the while transforming public locations into challenging and interesting pieces of art. His art is sometimes serious, but with a sense of fun, and the 'behind-the-scenes' making of it is nearly just as inspiring. @jengotch, the founder and CCO of @shopbando. She is honest, light-hearted, fun, witty, and colorful—and the brand reflects just that. @amysedaris: She’s hilarious and weird. @natgeo for the best nature photos ever, and @losthairdressers for the brilliant and inspiring editorials with amazing hair!"
"Coffee first, then Pilates! I can’t function without coffee, and because I stand all day and use my hands, pilates prepares my body in a gentle but effective way to handle the body mechanics required. After work, I like to meet up with friends at happy hour. Or go home and cook a meal in my kitchen and catch each other up on our day over dinner with my fiancé."
"Say yes, then figure it out!"
"The ability to educate and provide a customized Feathered Brow service to people all over the world—all you need is an email address. We call it a 'virtual appointment.' The following description will soon be available on my website, along with custom Kristie Streicher eyebrow grooming kits: 'A Virtual Appointment is a remote appointment with Kristie Streicher, wherein she will critically evaluate photos emailed to her and specifically recommend what action to take to achieve the Feathered Brow. Photos will be sent back to clients with detailed instructions for tweezing and specific product use. Consult details will be explicit, down to individual hairs. Prior to accepting Virtual Appointments, Kristie insists on 8 weeks of natural brow outgrowth. This means absolutely no tweezing, waxing, threading, or trimming of any kind during that time.'"
