Keira Knightley Proves That Sometimes, Simpler IS Better

We’re the first to try out any bold beauty trend, but it’s nice to be reminded that sometimes, a toned-down look can be just as striking. Case in point: Keira Knightley’s simple look at the Tribeca Film Festival screening of Begin Again last night. Undone waves, tawny blush, and bee-stung lips—the term “spring goddess” immediately came to mind when we saw her gorgeous, earthy makeup. Makeup artist Kate Lee said Knightley’s Chanel Couture Fall ’14 pastel blue and green dress inspired the look: “We decided [that] for the makeup look, we would go for something neutral and natural, but rich in texture.”

To create that texture, she used Chanel’s Lumières Facettes Quadra Eyeshadow ($59) in Quadrille in the outer corners of Knightley’s eyes and lower lashes. Then, she applied Chanel’s Illusion D’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow ($36) in New Moon to add a bit of shimmer along her lid and “melt away the edges.” And finally, Lee finished the look with Chanel’s Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine ($35) in Scenario. “It’s the most divine mulberry stain,” she says. “I gently dabbed the color on in a very natural way [so that] the lips look bitten.” We’re swapping out our bright eyeliner for soft brown shadows as we type (if only for today).
