We’ve been admiring Kate Bosworth’s texture since her Blue Crush days. Whether it was sea salt spray or the ocean’s actual salt water behind those effortless waves we don’t know, but we’ve moved on because Bosworth’s hair game has only been on the rise since then. She’s not afraid to take risks (remember her braided mohawk?), and even when she wears a ponytail, you know it’s not going to be any ordinary pony—as proven by her latest red carpet look.
"Tonight we went for an understated hairstyle,” celebrity hairstylist Bridget Brager says. “The dress and jewels were such a beautiful statement, so I wanted to keep it on the cool side with a textured pony.” Mission accomplished. To create Bosworth’s cool-girl ponytail, Brager first prepped the actress’ damp tresses with O&M’s Atonic Thickening Spritz ($26). “I dried her hair so as much natural texture as possible would come out—a lot of scrunching the hair up and then over directing it from side to side,” Brager says.
But the real secret to Bosworth’s lived-in, tousled texture is the curling technique. Once dry, Brager used a 1 1/2-inch curling iron and picked out random sections of hair, which she curled horizontally. (Yes, that’s right—you don’t always have to hold the barrel vertically.) And she used this trick to avoid creating curls that looked too polished: “I curled the same section up and then down, so no curl pattern was alike.”
“Once all of the hair was set, I sprayed Bumble and bumble’s Cityswept Finish ($29) onto the lengths and gave it all a good shake,” Brager says. Then it was up into a pony at the crown of the head, a light spritz of hairspray, and Bosworth’s textured ponytail was complete.
