How To Wear A Cool-Girl Braid Like Jessica Alba

If the half-shaved hair trend was never really up your alley, may we present to you a less intense alternative: Jessica Alba’s faux undercut side braid at the Comic Con press event for her new film, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.  Perfect for those with hair commitment issues, this braid—in the same vein as the one Cara Delevingne wore to the Met Ball this year—gives off the same “don’t mess with me” vibe, but with a chicer edge.

“When I saw Jessica’s outfit, I decide to do something modern, funky, and a little bit sexy,” hairstylist Renato Campora says. He says the key is to start with wet hair before you braid. “I created a part beginning at the top of her head, all the way down to the nape of her neck,” he says. “[Then], on the left side, I sprayed John Frieda Spiral Style Spray Gel ($7) and created a flat braid down the left side, from the front to the back of her head.”

He secured the braid with a small rubber band, then tucked it underneath the loose hair from the right side. To give her unbraided strands that sleek, super-straight effect, he applied Kérastase’s Resistance Spray Volumactiv ($40) throughout her hair, then blow dried it with a YS Park Round Brush ($111). The finishing touch? Running a T3 Flat Iron ($160) through her strands for that “extra sleekness.” A dame to kill for, indeed.
