The Secret to Jena Malone’s Ombre Lip is a $1 Lip Pencil

We’re suckers for a good red lip, but a good red lip that costs less than our daily coffee allowance? Consider us sold. Earlier this week, Jena Malone showed up at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 premiere in Los Angeles wearing a jaw-dropping fiery Emanuel Ungaro gown and a glossy, subtle ombré lip to match. “When I first saw Jena’s Ungaro gown, my first thought was, ‘Wow, bold move! Red hair and red dress… how about a red lip!” makeup artist Jenn Streicher tells us. Ready for the cincher? Streicher used three products from e.l.f. cosmetics to create the lip look, one of which was only one dollar. “First I applied e.l.f. Studio Moisturizing Lipstick ($3) in Red Carpet completely around her lips with a defining lip brush, then I used e.l.f. Essential Long-Wear Lip Liner Pencil ($1) in Bitter (a dark burgundy color) after the lipstick to outline the lips,” Streicher says. She colored in the corners of Malone’s lips with the burgundy pencil about a quarter of the way in on each side, then dabbed a lighter red lipstick (the brand’s Studio Moisturizing Lipstick ($3) in Velvet Rope) in the center of her lips for a subtle, ombré effect. Proof that glamour has no price tag!
