Editor's Picks: The Innovative In-Shower Products We Can't Stop Using
Nearly two years ago, I sang the praises of in-shower body lotion and how lifesaving it's been for people like me, who can't stand the greasy aftermath of typical moisturizers. Since then, it seems as though the in-shower experience has taken off, and brands have jumped on the bandwagon to make your time in the tub way more efficient, practical, and innovative—and all of Byrdie HQ has taken note.
Below, we've rounded up our favorite smart shower products that go far beyond your typical shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel. Careful, though—we should put out a disclaimer that trying these products may make you want to spend even more time soaking, so give them a go at your own risk.
Take a look at our favorite products below!
"It's surprisingly difficult to find a body scrub that A) doesn't get all over your shower, B) actually offers intense exfoliation, and C) has active skincare ingredients beyond what you could make at home in your kitchen. This KP scrub hits all three of these requirements out of the park."
"I have a blow-dryer that's been collecting dust under my sink for years. I honestly can't remember the last time I used it (or if it even still works, for that matter). As a dedicated air-dryer (and a loyal fan of the Perfect Hair Day line) for many years, I was immediately intrigued by Living Proof's newest launch, the In-Shower Styler ($24). I have slightly wavy hair, so my typical post-wash hair routine consists of hair oil on the ends and a wave spray throughout. However, more often than not, I either a) get lazy and skip all styling products or b) overdo one of the two, and end up with stringy or crunchy strands. But this product is actually used in-shower and rinsed out (leaving no excuse for me to skip it).
"When you rinse, the good ingredients (cationic resins and Living Proof's patented Thickening Molecule—PBAE, to be precise) are left behind, bound to your hair. Basically, it enhances your natural texture. For me, I can just towel dry, give my hair a twist (one on each side), and go. By the time I get to work, I can shake out my twists, give them a little scrunch, and I'll have tousled waves. Plus, I get a boost in body with the softness and shine I love. It's about as effortless as you can get."
"I enjoy showering with the enthusiasm most people usually reserve for surprise Momofuku birthday cake—that is to say, a lot. My time in the shower is a sacred time where I get to unwind from the day, turn my tired skin baby-smooth, and occasionally shrivel into a raisin because I've been in there much longer than the recommended 10 minutes.
"Tatcha's Black Sugar Body Gommage is my ultimate in-shower indulgence—it smells like sugar tinged with a whiff of something exotic I can never put my finger on, and it's the perfect consistency for a body exfoliator. Other sugar scrubs either dissolve too quickly and do nothing or feel rough and abrasive. Tatcha's version is made with the finest sugar crystals so it melts into your skin only after you've buffed it in for a few seconds, and then leaves just the slightest sheen behind (read: no oily feeling). Plus, the indigo soothes my sensitive skin, which can get itchy and irritated from other fragranced body products. I recently ran out of my cherished tub and plan on immediately restocking before Tatcha founder Victoria Tsai decides it's time for the limited-edition run to end (which hopefully never happens)."
"I've previously waxed poetic about this game-changing in-shower self-tanner, only complaining ever so slightly about the tint being a bit too light for my liking. However, I've recently tried the medium-to-tan variation, and it's perfect. Especially this time of year when New York is very confused, and it's hot one day, and then cold and rainy the next, I can have a bit of a tan without too many people questioning me or being able to immediately pinpoint my faux glow. I'm hooked."
L'Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil With Almond Oil ($25)
"This one is certainly a keeper—I've been using it since I became a beauty editor five years ago and don't see an end in sight. It's a silky-soft oil that foams up once it hits the water, so it's the perfect in-shower shave oil. It gently cleanses, nourishes, and moisturizes your skin for hours after you exit the shower. Plus, it smells like almond (without being too sweet)."
"I'm calling it: This new skincare brand is about to blow up. Each product is unisex and multipurpose (so you won't have 10 almost-empty bottles taking up space in your shower. This pick, in particular, is my favorite for the shower, as it's a luxurious, organic, two-in-one moisturizing body scrub made of fine sugar crystals, ground coffee, avocado, argan, and monoi oils. Even better, monoi oil works as a natural bug repellant for those humid summer nights. Win-win."
"I have always floundered from one scrub to another, never truly satisfied with one brand. However, all that stopped when I tried this coffee scrub from Frank Body. Made with coffee, cacao extract, almond oil, and macadamia oil, this scrub exfoliates, moisturizes, and visibly firms my skin. And, as if that weren't enough, it also smells really, really good."
