How To Make Your Manicure Last Longer

Prep Your Nails Properly
The most important thing you can do for your manicure happens before you start painting! You must properly clean your nails of any oil, lotion, and moisture for your base coat to properly adhere. How? Use a clean polish brush or small makeup brush to prep your nail with a mixture of 70 percent rubbing alcohol and 30 percent water, or just use a nail primer. We like OPI’s Chip Skip Manicure Prep Coat ($13) and Red Carpet Manciure’s Prep Max Adhesion Sanitizer ($4).

Allow The Right Dry Time
It’s very important you let your polish fully dry between coats. This means waiting a full three minutes between each coat—including your base and top coats.

Don't Blow On Your Nails
The moisture in your breath can actually prevent your lacquer from setting properly. If you must speed along the process, follow celeb manicurist Jenna Hipp’s tip and blow-dry your nails on a low, cool setting for a few seconds.

Apply a Thin Clear Coat Every Other Day
Every few days, apply a thin topcoat, which will keep the polish shiny and fill in any weak spots that are bound to crack. Some experts say every other day is best, while other suggest every three days. Trial and error will show you what works best for you!
Try Deborah Lippman's Umbrella Oxygen Raincoat Top Coat ($20) or Seche Vite's Dry Fast Topcoat ($6).

Soaking your hands in water—like when you do the dishes, for example—allows moisture to penetrate your polish, creating chips. The solution? A simple pair of gloves.
