How To Do Your Makeup for a Job Interview

How To Do Your Makeup for a Job Interview

We talk a lot about bold red lips and the magic of bedhead, but there are plenty of occasions that call for your most polished self—a corporate interview, for example. When Anna Kendrick stepped out at the Sundance Film Festival, we thought her side swept hair and softly defined eye struck a balance between age appropriate and sophisticated. We asked hairstylist Paul Norton and makeup artist Desirae Cherman to walk us through the look. Their tips are above; follow their lead next time you embark on a job hunt.

You don’t want to wear heavy makeup to a job interview, so your skin should be in great shape. Cherman used Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture ($65) to plump and hydrate Kendrick’s skin and Malin + Goetz Mojito Lip Balm ($15) to do the same to her lips. The more moisturized your lips are, the better they’ll hold color, which is essential if you’re sitting through an interview.

Use a lightweight foundation, like Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($60), to mask any imperfections. “I used a wet Beauty Blender Sponge ($20) so that it would really melt into the skin,” says Cherman. “This foundation’s beautiful; it’s satin, but not dewy.”

Cherman used Hourglass Cream to Powder Bronzer Duo ($40) on Kendrick’s t-zone and the top of her forehead. “This powder’s beautiful; it leaves a satin finish, but isn’t dewy.”

You want to look radiant, but you don’t want to blind your interviewer with a beachy glow, so use a powder highlighter. Cherman chose Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder ($45) in Dim Light brushing it on Kendrick’s cheeks, browbones, and down the bridge of her nose.

Go easy on the blush, concentrate a neutral color on the apples of your cheeks, like Cherman did with Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush ($30) in Glisten.

Choose a shimmering neutral—you want to make it clear you tried, without actually sparkling—for your lids. Cherman swept Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream ($25) in Steel across Kendrick’s lids, before using NYX Wonder Pencil ($5) in Light on the lower lashline. “Nude on the bottom waterline really pops that eye open, without being harsh,” the artist says.

Chanel Le Volume de Chanel Mascara ($30) in Noir is proving extra popular this awards season. Chernan used two coats on Kendrick’s top lashes. It might be time to invest in a tube—consider it a leap of faith that you’ll get the job!

Kendrick totes her own Japanese brow pencil around, but try MAC’s Penultimate Brow Marker ($20). Strong brows = strong presence.

If all goes well, you’ll be talking quite a bit while interviewing, so stay away from a heavy lipstick. Instead, enhance your natural color with a tint or balm. Chernan used Tarte Power Pigment Lip Color ($24) in Awakening on Kendrick.

Norton worked Joico Power Whipped Foam Mousse ($15) into Kendrick’s damp hair to guarantee it’d hold its shape and volume throughout the day before using the Ibiza Collection Blond Medium Round Brush ($45) to blow it out. You don’t have to have curly hair to enjoy the benefits of mousse—it really will maintain your style and keep your hair from getting greasy better than almost any other product.

“A key point to the curl is that each goes in a different direction, which creates movement and fills out the hair,” says Norton. He used Rowenta’s Versa Style 1-Inch Styling Iron ($160).

This is the perfect interview hair because it’s both down and pulled off your face—so you can’t play with it. “I used the Joico Crème Wax ($20) for shine,” says Norton. “Anna has a tendency to have a lot of flyaways and this locked it down.”
