How to Find the Best Lipstick at the Drugstore
CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipcolor ($7) in Flame and Darling
“This is a great spring color--probably my favorite of the bunch.” Blunder says of Flame, the coral-red shade. “It’s very flattering on anyone.” She also liked Darling, a mauve shade, calling it a “natural enhancer to your natural lip color.”
L’Oreal ColourRiche Colour Caresse ($10) in Sheer Linen
“If you’re doing a heavy eye, this dark nude is great,” Blunder says of Sheer Linen. “It has just a little bit of shimmer and that nice in-between texture, where it’s not too glossy, but boosts you up a bit.”
Rimmel Moisture Renew ($7) in Red Alert
“This is a lipstick that definitely requires a liner,” Blunder says, testing the shade on her hand. “The creamy texture is nice, though. And the finish is really great.” Blunder preaches the importance of a lip liner throughout our testing session: “Liner keeps the color from bleeding and really helps define the shape of your lips--a must with red.”
Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick Crème ($9) in Love That Pink
“This color would be great on your cheeks too, as a cream blush,” Blunder says. “It’s a beautiful shade of pink and the texture isn’t too heavy, too shiny, or too matte, making it fit for a multiple.”
Maybelline Color Whisper ($6) in Orange Attitude and Rose Attraction
“These are great for a woman who wants just a little bit more than a lip balm; they’re very moisturizing,” Blunder says. “I think a lot of women would love this formula because it’s foolproof--you don’t even need to look in a mirror.”
L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipstick ($9) in British Red
“I’m not a fan of long-lasting lipstick; I like the way a fresh lip looks so I’m happy to reapply,” Blunder says. “But this is a great color and might work well as a stain.” She recommends pressing the pigment into your lips with your finger and gradually building color until you reach your preferred shade.
Maybelline SuperStay 14HR Lipstick ($9) in Wine and Forever
“If you want to do that vampy look with a dark lip and tons of lashes--no other eye makeup--and you’re on the bolder side, this is the color to go with,” Blunder says. “But in the fall! It’s not for spring.”
Rimmel Lasting Finish By Kate Moss Lipstick ($5) in 102, 104, and 109
“These are beautiful! The texture reminds me of Tom Ford’s lipsticks,” Blunder says of the supermodel’s matte lipsticks. “I’m going to put these in my [makeup] kit.” One thing to note: moisturizing your lips before wearing a matte shade is a must. Blunder uses Dr. Hauschka’s Lip Care Stick ($20) at the beginning of the makeup application process so that by the time she gets to the lips it’s soaked in, leaving a ready canvas.
Milani Color Perfect Lipstick ($4) in Red Label
“I think you could make a nice stain out of this one too,” Blunder says of the bold shade. “Blot it with a Kleenex to totally change the color.”

CoverGirl Blast Flipstick ($8) in Perky, Cheeky, and Stunner
“I love the consistency and texture of these,” Blunder says. “I’ve never used a duo, but you could layer the colors to make one a little less bright or just save the darker one for evening.” The makeup artist recommends filling in your lips with the orange side of Stunner before using the gold end in the center of your mouth, instead of gloss, to build dimension.
What do Amanda Seyfried, Karlie Kloss, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have in common? Makeup artist Monika Blunder. Blunder, who was born in Austria and assisted the legendary Kevyn Aucoin at the start of her career, paints one gorgeous face after another with the world’s most luxurious products. But what, we wondered, would she do when faced with a sea of drugstore makeup? “To tell you the truth I’m not familiar with any of these,” she admitted. An hour later, however, Blunder was converted, or at least excited, about the thrifty thrills available at the drugstore. Read on to see what she recommends for spring--and what she said “feels just like Tom Ford.”
