Expert Advice to Fight Adult Breakouts

Anyone who has gone through hormonal acne in their late ‘20s, or even an occasional breakout post college, understands the frustration that comes along with it. Why? Adult breakouts, while they may look the same, need to be treated differently. We asked Renee Rouleau, celebrity esthetician and the brains behind her eponymous line of editor-favorite skincare products for help. (Don’t worry, you’re not alone! This is one of her most-asked questions!)

What’s the best way to treat aging concerns and breakouts at the same time?

When adults break out, they automatically turn to using harsh acne products to get the acne under control, but in the process, anti-aging is being compromised since drying out the skin causes unhealthy skin. Yet, if someone with breakouts uses products for anti-aging, they can often be loaded with rich oils that can clog pores and lead to more acne.

If you experience both wrinkles and breakouts, chemical peels are a great way to start. Professional skin peels in a skin spa or medical spa are extremely beneficial in exfoliating the skin, which offers both anti-aging and anti-breakout benefits. The more you exfoliate and rid the skin of surface dry skin cell build up, the less oil and bacteria will be trapped under the skin resulting in less clogged pores.

In addition, exfoliation helps to speed up cell turnover, which is an absolute must for keeping the skin healthy, smooth and young-looking. You can also look for an at-home peel, containing AHA’s and BHA’s which can clear blemishes and clogged pores while smoothing surface texture and reducing the appearance of fine lines.

Shop our favorite at-home peels above, all of which are packed with Rouleau’s must-have ingredients, and stay tuned for another Q&A with Rouleau next week!
