The ONE Major Hair Mistake You Need to Stop Making

Shampooing my hair has always been the most relaxing part of my daily shower routine. But on a recent trip to the salon, celebrity stylist Mika Fowler chastised me (very politely, I might add) on the frequency of my hair washing. Apparently, my efforts to keep my hair squeaky-clean by washing it nearly every day had been sucking the life out of my strands. Are you making the same damaging mistake? She gave me the rundown on how many times per week you should actually be shampooing your hair.

    How Long Should You Wait Between Washes?

    Fowler says you can cut your shampooing down to two or three days per week. If your hair is coarse or curly, shampooing once a week is fine. Why? Over-shampooing your hair strips it of nourishing oils that are essential to keeping it healthy and shiny. Plus, over-washing makes your color fade that much faster.

    However, skipping the shampoo doesn't mean you’ve got to keep your hair completely dry. If you're feeling grossed out by the whole prospect, Fowler says you can rinse your hair with warm water between washes. If your hair is prone to dryness, a conditioner is a mild way to clean your hair between shampoos. However, if you have fine hair, it may be best to limit your conditioner usage, as it can weigh your hair down.

    Your Best Day of Hair

    A major bonus of not shampooing every day: According to Fowler, your hair actually looks best on its second day—perfect for achieving that model-off-duty look.

    If your strands start to get oily, consider dry shampoo. Fowler recommends using Joico's Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo ($18) or baby powder on your roots to refresh your style. Opt for a ponytail or easy bun—get some inspiration here.

    Skip the Suds Even If You Work Out

    Your latest workout may make you feel like you need a good scrub to get all the sweat out, but Fowler says this isn’t necessarily the case. According to Fowler, simply rinsing your hair in warm water is enough between your shampoo days.

    Make Sure This Is Missing From Your Shampoo

    Lastly, Fowler says that sulfate-free shampoo is a good choice for most, since it won't remove all your hair’s natural oils. She also recommends choosing your shampoo based on your scalp and your lifestyle, not necessarily the texture of your hair. For instance, those with very oily scalps should choose a mild shampoo, because you may need to wash your hair more frequently than someone with a dry scalp. If you use a lot of product in your hair, especially oil-based products, look for a cleansing shampoo to remove buildup.
