As someone who has fallen asleep with my makeup on countless times (shameful, I know), I’m familiar with the fallout—breakouts, uneven skin tone, fine lines, and a dirty pillow case. As such, I’ve made it my mission to start removing it every single night, no matter what I’m doing or how tired I feel.

However, there are those nights when you don’t have your trusty cleanser or makeup removing wipes on hand. For those particular occasions, I did some research and found easy DIY recipes for homemade makeup remover. You can find every necessary ingredient either in your pantry or nearby at a pharmacy or grocery store. Below, find everything you need to keep your face clean and makeup-free before bed.

For Oily Skin

“Jojoba oil combined with witch hazel and aloe vera is gentle on the eyes without irritation. I added just a couple of drops of lemon essential oil for its natural grease cutting ability,” says Stephanie Gerber of Hello Glow.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. witch hazel
  • 2 tbsp. jojoba oil
  • 1 tbsp. aloe vera
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil

Directions

Using a funnel, pour witch hazel, jojoba and aloe vera into a small container with a lid. Add 2 drops of lemon essential oil. Swirl to combine ingredients.

To use, dispense a small amount onto a cotton pad and wipe gently over eye area. Don't pull or tug.

For Dry Skin

“Extra-virgin olive oil may sound scary to use on your face because it’s oil, but because it resembles the natural type of oil on your skin, it won’t clog your pores—it won’t cause acne,” says Michelle Phan. “The best part? It won’t dry out your skin, because stripping your skin of oil will not only irritate and dry out your skin but will cause the skin to produce more oils.”

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 bottle aloe vera water

Directions

Pour the olive oil into a bottle of aloe vera water. Shake the mixture.

Apply to a cotton pad before the two ingredients separate. Gently wipe over your face and eye area.

For Combination Skin

Green tea reduces sebum production and protects your skin against inflammation while grape-seed oil restores collagen and brightens your skin.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp. brewed green tea
  • 1/2 tbsp. vegetable glycerin
  • 1 tbsp. grape-seed oil

Directions

Combine the mixture in a spray bottle. Shake well so the ingredients thoroughly blend together.

Spray onto a cotton ball and apply directly to your skin. Let it sit for a few seconds as it breaks down the makeup and lifts it from the skin.
