Skipping This Step Could Explain Your Dry, Dull Strands
The beauty industry makes products for just about everything—actually, scratch that—the beauty industry makes products for literally everything. A lot of it is good (remember life before makeup primers and cleansing devices? Neither do we.). And, admittedly, a lot of it is ridiculous (have you seen the crazy beauty products you can buy on the internet?). While we will be foregoing the eyeball cleansing wipes we recently came across (yes, eyeball cleansing wipes), we can no longer ignore this crucial hair care product.

This part probably comes as no surprise, but the sun’s rays are damaging—not just to your skin, but to your hair as well. A Croatian study on UV damage revealed that sun exposure degrades protein and pigment in hair. UVA and UVB radiation cause color fading and premature hair aging (a.k.a. thinning), and are responsible for an overall dulling. The good news is the study also found that protecting hair with a product with UV filters is crucial for maintaining the integrity of your hair. Enter: hair sunscreen.
You may have written off hair sunscreen before, but if you’ve ever colored your hair now is the time to take it seriously. Color-treated tresses are at a higher risk for damage since chemically-treated hair is more sensitive. And excessive sun exposure can even change the tone of your tresses (hello brassiness!).
Note: Hair sunscreen is not like face and body sunscreen. Most come in easy-to-apply sprays and double as styling agents, leaving you with silky, shiny, frizz-free strands. From lightweight mists to dry oils to styling creams, there’s a product to fit every hair routine.
