Famed photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin have been particularly busy lately: they’ve launched a stunning book entitled Pretty Much Everything ($70), a fine-jewelry collection, and shot Miu Miu’s pretty spring ads. But before all that, they whipped up a bespoke fragrance with Byredo’s Ben Gorham inspired by their photograph ‘Kirsten 1996’: Byredo Parfums 1996 ($175) by Inez & Vinoodh.
“These are the notes that we’ve always been attracted to that come from the different countries we have memories of,” say the photographers. 1996 opens with juniper and violets, before opening up into warm amber and, eventually, leather and patchouli—and technically launched three years ago. Byredo produced the unisex fragrance for family and friends of Inez and Vinoodh and only now, after three years of begging, are selling it to the public. So what does the public think? We took the scent on a jaunt around the office for a blind smell-test.
Our first nose said it smelled sweet, “almost as sweet as candy!” but once the top notes wore off things took a turn for the masculine. “It smells like a hot dude,” said one sniffer. “There’s still some warmth and sweetness to it, with some vanilla yumminess at the end, but definitely a hot guy.”
The boys were in surprising agreement. “It reminds me of the outdoors,” said one. The other? “A festive forest.” That’s one description with which we think and Inez and Vinoodh would be particularly thrilled!
