From Naomi to Kate, Channel Your Favorite '90s Models

“Supermodels” is not the kind of word you throw around. In fact, we’d argue that the description belongs exclusively to the models who ruled the ‘90s: Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, and Linda Evangelista, to name a few. Why? They redefined what it was to be a model, breaking barriers (Moss is only 5’7”!) and leveraging their personalities into careers that outlasted the average catwalker. To wit: just this month Moss, Campbell, Evangelista, and Turlington are on the cover of Interview magazine. And while emulating their long legs, Versace campaigns, and a rock star relationship is a little beyond our scope, we can help you get the supers’ beauty look with a few key products.

In the ‘90s, models’ personalities shone brighter than their skin. Get a shine-free complexion by applying Make Up For Ever’s Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation ($36) with M.A.C.’s 190 Foundation Brush ($34), then set your skin with Physicians’ Formula Airbrushing Loose Powder ($14).

Forget bronzer and highlighter, these models were too busy to sepnd hours contouring. Instead take Campbell and Schiffer’s lead and define your cheekbones with a dark blush dusted in the hollows of your cheeks. The trick? Keep the formula shimmer free. We like Edward Bess’ Blush Imperiale ($42) or CoverGirl’s Cheekers Blush ($5).

Go ahead and dismiss the bright lipsticks you amassed this summer— Schiffer, Crawford, and Campbell were only interested in shades of brown. For day, pick up one of the six beige hues from Hourglass’ Femme Nude Lip Stylos ($30). For more drama, line your lips with Sephora’s Nano Lip Liner ($5) in Cherry Chestnut, then layer on NYX’s Matte Lipstick ($6) in Maison or Revlon’s Super Lustous Crème Lipstick ($7) in Spicy Cinnamon.

We’d bet all the top models had a bottle of Calvin Klein’s ck One ($44) in their bathrooms. The unisex fragrance made headlines when a teenage Kate Moss and superbly-muscled Marky Mark (okay fine, Mark Wahlberg) starred in the shocking-at-the-time ads. Only later did Moss admit that the pressure of the shoot sent her into a nervous breakdown at 18.

You’ll need defined eyes to stand out in this group. Pick up Clinique’s All About Shadow Quad ($28) in Teddy Bear and apply the darkest shade in your socket with Sonia Kashuk’s Large Domed Eye Shadow Brush ($13). Blend a medium shade onto your lid, then highlight your brow bone with the palest hue.

Always keep a brown kohl pencil handy. Moss liked to line all the way around her eyes, while Crawford stuck to the top lashline. Choose your spirit model and follow her lead with L’Oreal’s Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner ($8) in Brown. Then coat top and bottom lashes with Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara ($5).

Take Crawford and Schiffer’s lead and bump up your hair’s volume. Work a big dollop of John Frieda’s Luxurious Volume Building Mousse ($7) through your damp locks, blow-dry your hair upside down, then reach for a 2-inch curling iron. Wrap large sections under, release, and tousle with your hands.

Keep the volume going strong with a side part, then give your strands a heavy dose of Finesse’s Extra Hold Hairspray ($4). Have bangs? Give them height with a round brush. If your hair falls flat easily, try switching your part mid-day, it will keep your hair looking full, even if you’re not running to a photo shoot.
