There are two golden rules in beauty: always wash your face, and never wear both an eye and a lip. Don’t believe anyone who argues with the first, but the second? We’re over it. A string of risk-taking women have recently stepped out wearing a smoky eye and colorful lip without looking like, for lack of a better word, a hussy. Instead, they look fresh and glamorous—a winning combination we’ll be testing out at one holiday party after another this season.

“It starts with the outfit,” says makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, the woman behind Olivia Wilde’s stellar look above, on pulling off the full face of makeup. “Olivia’s wearing a super clean, well-tailored suit that has an androgynous vibe to it. I don’t like to say there are dos and don’ts or rules—it’s based on balance.”

More tips on pulling this off from Inglessis, as well as Sandra Bullock’s makeup artist Sabrina Bedrani, above.

Sabrina Bedrani created one awesome look after another for Bullock’s Gravity press tour. She says a bold and eye and lip feels “sophisticated” and echoes Inglessis: “The key to pulling off both is balance,” she says. “One can’t compete with the other.”

Makeup artist Ve Neil, who did the makeup for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, has been doing Lawrence’s makeup on tour, too. For the film’s Spanish premiere, the actress sported a shimmering charcoal and purple eye with a matte watermelon lip. “Use the finishes—glossy, matte, shimmery, dewy—to keep the look current,” says Inglessis. “Play with opposite textures so that you don't end up with a glossy lip, dewy skin, and shimmery eye, which could look a little 80's!”

Who needs a red carpet? Katy Perry sported a brown smoky eye and glossy berry lip to dinner in London last month. “In makeup, like in fashion, there are trends,” says Bedrani. “I think with a late eighties early nineties influence we're going to see more make up.”

In Milan, DJ Leigh Lezark paired a modern, sparkle-free kohl cat eye with a matte, retro pink lip saving the dewy radiance for her skin.

“When trying this look, still pick the strongest feature and make that the statement,” advises Inglessis. Makeup artist Katey Denno did that here, making sure Selena Gomez’s lips stood out for an appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, even with the brown and berry shadows highlighting her eyes.

At the Museum of Modern Art’s tribute to Tilda Swinton in New York, Karlie Kloss went for it. The model’s voluminous lashes, kohl-rimmed eyes, matte wine lip, and burgundy blush is the perfect example of wearing a full-face of makeup without looking over the top.

Fanning’s the only one on this list pairing her eye and lip with color—she wore a royal blue Valentino dress to the premier of The Last of Robin Hood in Toronto—and it looks fantastic. So go ahead and throw that rule out the window, too!

“I think this makeup look gets a bad rap, because doubling up reminds people of the ‘80s,” Inglessis says of Olivia Wilde’s makeup at the London premier of Drinking Buddies. “But when executed correctly, It's very glamorous, powerful, and sexy.”
