Emma Roberts Talks Spider Lashes, Her New Bob, and Pale Skin Makeup Tricks

Emma Roberts may be Hollywood royalty—dad is actor Eric Roberts, aunt is Julia—but she’s forging her own path in Tinseltown. Her resume includes big-budget films like BlowValentine’s Day, and We’re The Millers, plus a starring role (and amazing performance!) in TV’s American Horror Story: Coven. Add that to her indie film projects—LymelifeCeleste & Jesse Forever, and her latest, Adult World—and you have a small taste of her impressive resume. In Adult World, out now, Roberts plays a recent college grad struggling to find her voice as a poet while working at an adult bookstore—a far cry from the safer roles she’s undoubtedly been offered. She’s also a face of Neutrogena, just got engaged to Adult World and AHS: Coven co-star Evan Peters, and is definitely one of our style favorites, both on and off the red carpet. And did we mention she’s only 23? Happily, Roberts took a break from her busy schedule to talk to us about her new bob, the beauty tricks she’s learned on set, and all her must-have products

On a day off, Roberts keeps her makeup light, sticking to a little mascara, blush, and powder—in a shade darker than her skin. “I’m so pale that all my face makeup is the lightest shade,” she says. “But I learned on set that you can contour your cheeks with a powder one shade darker than your skin—and it really works!” Try Clinique’s Stay Matte Sheer Pressed Powder ($23) to try her trick. As for her blush, Roberts uses Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer ($10).

You may reserve lip exfoliation for your own bathroom, but Roberts carries a scrub with her at all times. “My lips get so dry, they peel,” she says. “So I use Fresh’s Sugar Lip Polish ($23) twice a day.” Post scrub, she layers on her go-to balm: Neutrogena’s Lip Moisturizer ($4)

“I tend to keep it pretty natural on my lips,” Roberts told us. She avoids anything glossy or sticky, sticking to Neutrogena’s Moisture Smooth Color Stick ($7) on days off.  “You can rub it on your lips hard for a lot of color, or use your finger to create a stain,” she says. “I like Sweet Watermelon, or if I want something darker, I’ll use Plum Perfect.”

“I prefer a bold eye over a dark lip on the red carpet,” Roberts says. “It’s so much less maintenance through the night.” For Roberts, that normally means a full, thick lash, as well. “My lashes are naturally long, so I Iike to accentuate them with a lot of mascara,” she says.

Long nights and early morning are business as usual on movie sets, so Roberts battles puffy and red eyes the old fashioned way. “Put a cold spoon under your eyes for a few minutes,” she says. “It really works.” Then it’s on to celeb-favorite Rhoto Cool Eye Drops ($6). “They burn,” she says. “But then your eyes look like you slept for three days!”

“I’ve been using brown mascara and eyeliner lately,” Roberts told us. “I never considered it until just recently, but it’s so much softer.” In her makeup bag you’ll find Shu Uemura’s Eyelash Curler ($20) and Neutrogena’s Healthy Lengths Mascara ($8) in Black and Brown.

“I really like the Brooke Shields-inspired, brushed-up eyebrow look,” Roberts says. She opts for a brow gel to keep her arches in place, alternating between a clear formula, Anastasia’s Clear Brow Gel ($22), and the brand’s Tinted Gel ($22) for when she wants to make a statement.

Roberts recently jumped on the bob bandwagon, trusting hair legend Chris McMillian with the scissors. “I had long blonde extensions for American Horror Story for six months,” she says. “I couldn’t wait to get rid of them! Two days after we wrapped filming I had them taken out and cut my hair short.”

One thing that hasn’t changed is Roberts’ go-to hair products. The actress applies Serge Normant’s Meta Revive Dry Shampoo ($25) every day. “It gives really great texture, even on freshly washed hair,” she says.

Roberts also swears by Unite’s 7Seconds Conditioner ($25) and Oribe’s Apres Beach Wave and Shine Hairspray ($39) for her locks. She applies the former to her wet hair and the latter on her damp tresses for a “beachy, mermaid wave.”

Roberts rotates between two fragrances based on her mood: Chloe’s Roses De Chloe ($70) and Le Labo’s Santal 33 ($240). “I’m dying to try the new Mary Kate and Ashley perfumes,” she says about Elizabeth and James’ Nirvana White ($75) and Nirvana Black ($75). “That’s going to be my next fragrance purchase.”

Given Roberts’ love of a full lash, it’s no surprise she calls Twiggy one of her beauty icons. “I love that she always did the clumpy lashes,” Roberts told us. “I love the doe-eyed look.”

“I love all of Essie’s polishes,” Roberts says. “Right now I’m really into this denim blue color—I’m really into anything denim blue right now actually.”

That love of denim blue carries over to Roberts’ eyes, too. “I’m pretty boring with eyeliner, but sometimes a makeup artist will cajole me into trying a color,” she says. “I really want to try a blue eyeliner right now.”  We suggest Buxom’s Hold The Line Waterproof Eyeliner ($17) in Pick Me Up.

Roberts splits her time between movie sets and her home in Los Angeles, so she keeps her carry-on stocked with her essentials. In her bag you’ll find Neutrogena’s Cleansing Towelettes ($5), Rodin’s Oilio Lusso Luxury Body Oil ($110), and Tocca’s Kyoto Mini Candle ($20). “A candle makes a hotel room feel so much more homey,” she says.
