The Best Shades of Red Hair for Every Skin Tone
ICYMI, Emma Roberts recently swapped her blond strands for a standout red shade that she and her colorist refer to as “Desert Rose.” And over the past two weeks since the Scream Queens star first debuted her fiery new look, we have been toying with the idea of following in her footsteps. We reached out to the experts at New York–based salon Hairstory and asked them to weigh in on the subject. Keep reading to see what colorist Roxie Darling has to say about choosing the proper shade of red for different skin tones.
"Anybody can wear any shade of red," Darling tells us. "It’s really about placement, and I recommend consulting with your colorist about what type of red is best for you. If you want to bring out more golden or warmer tones in your skin, I usually suggest adding copper or strawberry tones to your hair. If you want to look paler and accentuate the pink in your skin, then I recommend adding darker or cooler red tones."
"If your skin is in the olive family, try to avoid anything too yellow, as reds will be better for you," she says. "If you're very pale, try to avoid going too dark, as it can look harsh against your skin tone."
For color-treated hair, we recommend StriVectin Hair Color Care Shampoo ($23)
