The Ultimate DIY Sunburn Soother

We’d like to believe that we’re always armed and ready with our favorite sunscreen, prepared to defend our skin from the sun’s damaging rays at any given moment. In reality, sunburns happen—even to the most devout SPF-wearers.

We asked Rianna Loving, esthetician and founder of the natural skincare line Orgo, for a DIY sunburn soother that we could make in the comfort of our own homes. Her all-natural solution? A refreshing, healing face mist you can store in your fridge all summer long. Lobster face, begone!

    8 ounces of aloe vera juice
    1 tablespoons of blueberries, sliced in half
    3 cucumber slices, peeled
    1 spray bottle

    Aloe Vera: Anti-Inflammatory

    There’s a reason why people rub aloe vera on sunburns and other skin irritations. “Aloe vera has long been used as a natural anti-inflammatory,” Loving says. Ancient Egyptians used to call it  “The Plant of Immortality,” because of its ability to survive in hot, dry climates. When you apply aloe vera topically, it acts as a protective layer to the top layer of your skin and absorbs quickly to replenish moisture loss.

    Blueberries: Antioxidants

    Loving explains that blueberries have extremely high levels of vitamins C, B, A, and E. This makes it a powerful superfood, especially because it contains the antioxidant anthocyanin, which helps neutralize free radicals. “With this powerful combination, blueberries are [an amazing] anti-aging ingredient for the skin!” she says.

    Cucumbers: Protector

    Cucumbers are known for being soothing, but they also have a lesser-known skin power: “Cucumbers contain powerful antioxidants that help build collagen and elastin, and protect your skin cells from the damaging effects of the sun,” Loving says. For example, the vitamin E and potassium in cucumber seeds are proven to help reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging.

    Step one: Pour your aloe vera juice in a clean spray bottle.

    Step two: Add in sliced blueberries and peeled cucumbers.

    Step three: Refrigerate

    Step four: Spritz away!


    Loving says you can keep this bottle in the refrigerator and use it throughout the day to help your skin heal. Because aloe vera absorbs quickly, feel free to spray frequently! “This infusion will help keep your skin cool and naturally reduce pain, inflammation, and redness,” she says.
