Taylor Schilling nailed the DSE with smoldering bronzy-brown shadow at the Orange Is The New Black Season 2 photo call in London last week. Mary Greenwell, the London-based makeup artist responsible for her look, says: “A smoky eye is really about a great four-color palette. Anything from a Tom Ford to a Chanel, of which there are many. Use the highlighting color under the brows, and a softer tone through the socket building down to darker intensity around the eye. Tom Ford’s are unbeatable. The one I used on Taylor has a wonderful cream, a taupe, a dark brown, and a rusty color that is my absolute go-to product.” Shop the exact product Greenwell used, Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad ($78) in Cocoa Mirage, here.
Greenwell then used a brown eye pencil smudged into eyelashes—“I never use a black pencil. I find it way too harsh,” she says—and “loads of black mascara. It’s the best tool we can all have in our makeup kits.” Her trick for creating the perfect smoky look without making it too severe is to fill in brows minimally. “I think in many cases they can be drawn out too much, and I prefer to keep them quite natural and quite soft and just keep the eye itself smoky. The smoky eye is about balance. It’s not feline, it’s not extended, it’s just enhancing the real eye and bringing it out.”
