    Taylor Schilling

Taylor Schilling nailed the DSE with smoldering bronzy-brown shadow at the Orange Is The New Black Season 2 photo call in London last week. Mary Greenwell, the London-based makeup artist responsible for her look, says: “A smoky eye is really about a great four-color palette. Anything from a Tom Ford to a Chanel, of which there are many. Use the highlighting color under the brows, and a softer tone through the socket building down to darker intensity around the eye. Tom Ford’s are unbeatable. The one I used on Taylor has a wonderful cream, a taupe, a dark brown, and a rusty color that is my absolute go-to product.” Shop the exact product Greenwell used, Tom Ford Eyeshadow Quad ($78) in Cocoa Mirage, here.

Greenwell then used a brown eye pencil smudged into eyelashes—“I never use a black pencil. I find it way too harsh,” she says—and “loads of black mascara. It’s the best tool we can all have in our makeup kits.” Her trick for creating the perfect smoky look without making it too severe is to fill in brows minimally. “I think in many cases they can be drawn out too much, and I prefer to keep them quite natural and quite soft and just keep the eye itself smoky. The smoky eye is about balance. It’s not feline, it’s not extended, it’s just enhancing the real eye and bringing it out.”

    Sarah Hyland

Sarah Hyland's kohl-rimmed eyes and metallic shadow at the 2014 Glamour Women Of The Year Awards complemented her iridescent mermaid-scale dress, but didn't overpower thanks to a glossy nude lip. Tempered by the soft smoky shadow shades, the black eyeliner was chic and ridiculously sexy, not grungy.

    Kirsten Stewart

Kristen Stewart's look at the Cannes premier of Clouds of Sils Maria last month was the epitome of daytime sultry done right. Makeup artist Christophe Danchaud mixed warm brown, gray, and black tones from Chanel's Quadra Eyeshadow ($59) in Tissé Mademoisell and lined her top and bottom lashes with the dark purple shade from the Tissé Gabrielle palette for a hint of shimmer (similar palettes here). He enhanced her natural lip color with Chanel Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine ($35) in Satisfaction.

    Joan Smalls

Debuting fresh bangs thanks to stylist Amoy Pitters, Joan Smalls rocked smoky eye makeup in the same shade as her chocolate locks at the CFDA Awards last week. Makeup artist Sir John paired the look with a true nude lip, allowing the model’s killer new 'do and alluring eye makeup to stand out. We like Lancome's L’Absolu Rouge ($30) in Rich Cashmere for a flawless nude lip.

    Jaime King

At the Fifa World Cup launch party, an ever-radiant Jaime King sported a stunning version of the daytime smoky eye that proves the look’s versatility. With glowing skin, defined brows, and ever-so-slight cheek color, a perfectly-blended sparkly blue smoky eye looks striking yet approachable for daytime. Dior’s 5 Couleurs New Look Eyeshadow Palette ($60) in Bleu De Paris has the perfect blue shades necessary to recreate this look.

    Emma Roberts

At the May premiere of her flick Palo Alto, Emma Roberts stunned in shimmery cooper shadow with black liner along the waterline that made her eye color pop. Roberts' longtime makeup artist Dawn Broussard played up her natural lips with Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick ($9) in a pinky-nude shade like Fresh Papaya. Though her character in the film is an angsty teenager, Roberts looked the vision of sophistication in this rose gold makeup.

    Maria Menounos

The theme of Maria Menounos' recent press tour for her book The Every Girl's Guide To Diet And Fitness might as well be "the daytime smoky eye." In almost every city, at every signing, the gorgeous multi-hyphenate has stepped out in the perfect daytime-appropriate smoky eye thanks to makeup artist Demetris Giannetos, who creates her signature look by blending two brown shadows—MAC’s Eye Shadow ($15) in Swiss Chocolate and Embark—and then smudging MAC's dry Eye Pencil ($16) in Ebony into the roots of top and bottom lashes. Giannetos lines her waterline using Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Gel Eyeliner ($22), and completes the look with L'Oreal's Lash Architect 4D Mascara ($9), keeping lips understated in a glossy nude. He loves Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($62) for making skin seem lit from within.
