CoverGirl's New Beauty App Is Like Tinder for Drugstore Makeup
Searching for the right makeup product is like hunting for a soul mate, and we only wish the drugstore shopping experience felt as personal as it does at Sephora. While it’s certainly possible to find holy grail products one aisle over from the allergy meds, there’s a lot of guesswork in the process. After all, you’re not exactly allowed to rip open the cardboard packaging of every intriguing product you see before purchasing it. Let’s just say, buying drugstore makeup is like going on a cheap blind date with an eyeliner pencil. Anything could happen.
That said, nobody likes blind dates. Which is exactly the issue CoverGirl’s new (free) beauty app, BeautyU, is attempting to fix (for makeup, at least).
With its colorful, swiftly moving interface, this futuristic app works to offer personalized product recommendations and beauty inspo by evaluating your facial features, taste in beauty, and personality traits.
Here’s how it works: First, the app scans your face (not unlike Benefit’s Brow Genie, which is also super fun to play with, by the way). Then, it has you answer a survey of questions like, “Do you prefer your makeup to look dramatic or natural?” “Do you mind touching up your makeup throughout the day?” and “What would be your ideal date?” In the end, it presents you with a collection of products, red carpet looks, and video tutorials, tailor-made to suit you, inside and out. What’s more is that you can also virtually try on makeup looks, thanks to the app’s high-tech, face-tracking “magic mirror.”
Though the app doesn’t recommend brands beyond CoverGirl, it does offer a useful, innovative way to shop for affordable makeup that feels distinctly higher end than a PJ-clad stroll through the drugstore. (Plus, I can tell the app is pretty accurate, as it’s already recommended a few products that I’ve previously tried and fallen in love with).
