In honor of the upcoming 89th Academy Awards, we’re taking a trip down memory lane to reminisce over some of our favorite leading ladies’ first Oscars beauty looks. From Nicole Kidman’s ringlets to Scarlett Johansson’s pink eye shadow, our nostalgic side is freaking out over how different some of these women looked back then—and in some cases, how much they still look exactly the same (ahem, Jen).
Streep, whose fresh-faced red carpet beauty look four decades ago still has us swooning, is up for what could be her fourth Oscar for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins. Kidman, who took home the Best Actress Oscar in 2002, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress this year for her role in Lion. As many of these women take to the red carpet again on Sunday for one of the biggest nights in Hollywood, let’s revisit their throwback looks and admire their timeless beauty.
Throw it way, way back with us and keep scrolling for to see 12 celebs’ Oscars debuts!
We want to squeeze Witherspoon’s cheeks here, Aunt Gertrude style—she just looks so damn cute. This was taken right after the success of Legally Blonde, aka right before she became a household name.
Theron opted for a retro curled bob and thin, arched brows for her Oscars debut. We’re too entranced by how green her eyes look to comment on anything else.
Pink eye shadow, coiffed and curled strands, and a metallic red lip? It must be the early 2000s. (Also, if anyone can pull off this look, it’s Scarlett.)
Moore graced the Oscars red carpet back in 1998, shortly after her role in cult-favorite The Big Lebowski. We dig her subtle smoky eye and sleek, deep side part—a timeless beauty look that wouldn’t seem out of place on this year’s red carpet.
Along with her Oscars red carpet debut, Berry also secured a Revlon campaign in 1996—and with how good she makes a brick-brown lip and feathered pixie look, we can definitely see why. (Click here for a genius lipstick trick she shared with us on the set of her most recent Revlon campaign shoot!)
We love Streep’s fresh-faced look at her first Oscars, right after her role in Woody Allen’s film Manhattan.
Ugh, Cate—everything about this look is so good. Her “naked” hair, glossy berry lip, and matte skin make this perfectly undone look one of our favorites.
This was right before Winslet started filming a little flick called Titanic. We can see why James Cameron would cast her as the sensitive socialite, Rose.
This was Aniston’s first Oscars appearance with then-boyfriend Brad Pitt, and it’s easy to understand why they were heralded as the golden couple of the time.
Nicole Kidman's fiery mane was styled to early-'90s perfection in a curly updo with several tendrils let loose to frame her face.
This was Roberts’s first-ever Oscars nomination for her performance in Steel Magnolias. Is anyone else getting Cindy Crawford vibes? We love her big brow-and-hair combo.
Watts is pretty much the epitome of bombshell at the 2002 Oscars. Tousled, beachy waves (before they were even cool), dewy skin, and thick, lush lashes… a perfect Oscars beauty debut.
