CC Cream vs. BB Cream: What's the Difference, Anyway?

Audrey Noble

One of the questions we get asked all the time is what's the difference between a BB cream and a CC cream? (We also get asked what a DD cream even is, but we're going to save that for another post.)

To be honest, the two are very similar. Both creams provide foundation-like coverage and aim to even out your skin tone. BB cream traditionally means beauty balm cream and it focuses on smoothing, blurring, and tinting the skin. "It offers skincare benefits such as sun protection, antioxidants, hydration—along with coverage. Traditionally, BB creams were formulated to substitute for foundations, so they tend to provide a lot of coverage," says Charlotte Cho, co-founder and chief curator of Soko Glam.

CC cream, on the other hand, is short for color-correcting cream. "CC creams are an iteration of the BB cream. They offer the same skincare benefits and protection that a BB cream can provide but are closer to skincare in that they color correct redness and create even skin tone through sheer, natural-looking coverage," Cho says.

Is one better than the other? No, not necessarily. It really all depends on what you're looking to treat and cover. So in the battle of CC cream versus BB cream, you're the one who can ultimately decide the winner. But don't worry, we're here to help out if you really can't choose. We talked about our favorite CC and BB creams and picked out the seven best ones.
