Look of the Day: Carey Mulligan's Soft Retro Waves

Lindsey Metrus

While Carey Mulligan’s moving new film Suffragette doesn’t play into the glitz and glamour (understandably so), Mulligan was a true vision at the movie’s premiere on Monday night in New York City. Accompanying her stunning black Alexander McQueen dress were soft retro waves and a bold red lip. We love that her beauty look took a page from the late 19th- and early 20th-century era that the movie’s set in, and we wanted to learn how to re-create her simple yet sophisticated ’do.

Suave Professionals celebrity stylist Jenny Cho says she “was inspired by the vintage feeling of the Alexander McQueen dress she wore, so I wanted to create a modern version of a retro wave with a side part.” To achieve the look, Cho combined Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Volumizing Soufflé Mousse ($5) with a drop of Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil ($6) to towel-dried hair and blew it out with a round brush. Says Cho of the product combination, “I like to use a hybrid of styling products because the mousse helps create fullness while the oil adds beautiful shine.”

Next, Cho spritzed some Suave Professionals Flexible Control Finishing Hairspray ($3) onto two-inch sections starting at the nape of the neck, then created S-shape waves using a flatiron. She then gave Mulligan’s hair some texture with a few sprays of Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Weightless Dry Shampoo ($6) and gently brushed the waves to loosen and “modernize” them. Finally, Cho tucked the hair behind Mulligan’s ear on one side and lightly misted again with hair spray to finish the look.
