Cara Delevingne's Makeup Artist Talks Brows

Welcome to our new feature, ask an artist! We’re kicking things off with Wendy Rowe, the British makeup genius behind Cara Delevingne, Sienna Miller, more Vogue covers than you could possibly count, and a stellar blog, she also consults for Burberry’s flourishing cosmetics collection. Her first question, right this way!

When you work with Cara Delevingne, what do you do with her brows? And if I’m not blessed with those arches, how can I fake it?

Cara has really dark, dense brows naturally, so I mainly focus on grooming them and keeping them in position. Sometimes I'll extend them at the end slightly to create a nice shape so they don't finish abruptly. And I'll always finish by combing through them with L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray ($7) sprayed onto a disposable mascara wand. Hairspray is the best for keeping brows in place as it has a strong hold, but there isn’t the build up or flakiness that you can sometimes get with brow gels.

If you aren't blessed with brows like Cara, but want a similar look, it's best to keep in mind that you need to work with what you've got. If you have brow hairs but they aren’t dark, you can brush through a dark brown mascara to give a darker feel. (But if you don’t have many brow hairs, I don't recommend trying to pencil in brows! It will not look like Cara—just unnatural.)

You can fill in your brows and create a slightly bigger shape though to give a feeling of a fuller brow that still feels real. Steer clear of powder products that attach to the skin and create a block of color that look painted in. Instead, fill them in with a cream-textured product, like Tom Ford’s Brow Sculptor ($42), and always apply in brush strokes in the same direction the hairs grow. Its see-through quality looks more natural.
